N.Y.C. Ballet Dancers Tiler Peck and Roman Mejia Are Engaged! (Exclusive)
"I truly feel like I found my person," the ballerina tells PEOPLE of her fiancé
Two principal dancers from the New York City Ballet, Tiler Peck and Roman Mejia, are newly engaged after a special evening inspired by their shared love for N.Y.C. – the city that brought them together.
Mejia, 24, popped the big question on Sunday, Sept. 15 in a suite overlooking Central Park after they enjoyed a dinner at the upscale restaurant Mandarin Oriental.
"I truly feel like I found my person," Peck, who has choreographed with Boston Ballet, Northern Ballet and the Cincinnati Ballet, says in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.
"Roman is kind and gentle but knows who he is. From the moment I met him, I saw so many of the special qualities within him that my dad had," she continues. "I have never felt so sure about making a decision as getting to say 'yes' to him. I feel very lucky."
The couple first met as dance partners and later quarantined together during the COVID-19 pandemic so they could continue working. Additionally, Peck, 35, has worked as a choreographer for John Wick: Chapter 3 and appeared in the Netflix drama Tiny Pretty Things and Hulu's documentary Ballet NOW.
"Roman is not only my favorite dancing partner of all time, but now I get to have him as my forever partner in everything," Peck says.
Mejia – who was born in Fort Worth, Tex. – proposed with a ring by Peck’s favorite jewelry designer Stephanie Gottleib. The engagement ring incorporates her grandma Princess' stone as she and Peck have a very close relationship. The ring features both of their birthstones on the inside – which Peck says is one of her "favorite parts."
The bride-to-be was "very surprised" by the proposal, although their families were both in the loop as Mejia got Peck’s mother’s permission to propose months in advance and his mother was stationed at their apartment to watch their dog Cali for the evening.
As of now, Peck says they haven't started wedding planning yet because they are just "enjoying being engaged for the moment."
The ballerina showed off her sparkler in a post on her Instagram Stories on Tuesday, Sept. 17, where she posed with fellow dancer Chun Wai Chan in their ballet costumes. Her arm was propped towards the camera as it rested on her leg with her engagement ring on full display.

In February, Peck posted a sweet Valentines’ Day tribute to her now-fiancé on Instagram, writing, "Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️ Hopefully you find someone to ✨ lift ✨ you up and ✨spin✨ you around. Very grateful to have this man by my side who I get to dance and share life with 😘."
Along with the heartfelt caption, she shared a set of photos of the couple, the first of which showed them dancing under a bridge with Mejia carrying her over his shoulders. Next is a snap of them backstage in full costume and glam, followed by a casual selfie of them cozied together on a boat. Lastly is a blurry image of them embracing each other from the same photoshoot as the first picture.
