Aussie mum’s genius $8 Kmart sandpit hack
A mum’s idea to convert a tent into a sandpit has been dubbed an absolute genius hack.
A portable sandpit play area that also provides shade and can be zipped up at the end of playtime is the summer backyard toy we’ve all been asking for.
Posting her idea on Kmart Mums Australia, Krystal Findlay shared how she bought an $8 tent from Kmart and filled it with sand to make the outdoor play area.
The South Australian mum of twins Ethan and Ava-Rose says she originally had a shell pool which she was using as a sandpit, but was worried about the sun exposure.
"As a mum I was thinking how can I still let them have fun and protect them from the sun," Krystal tells Be.
"I purchased the tent because we were going camping and I used it to put their toys in so they had somewhere to play still and had shade.
"That’s when it dawned on me to use it when we got home for their sandpit. They love it and I’m happy because not only do they have more room to play but they have shade."
She also said her ‘invention’ had the added bonus of being able to be closed up. That way no nasty bugs, or neighbour’s cats that see sand as a litter box can get in.
The easy-peasy play area costs less than $20 – the $8 tent from Kmart and five bags of sand from Bunnings for $7.20.
Now mums everywhere can’t wait to set up their own version at home.
“Great idea, best yet,” one mum wrote.
“I'm stealing this idea for daughters 2nd birthday,” another added.
