A Midcentury-Inspired Smart Home on 18 Acres in Rural Utah Lists for $2.35 Million

While some of Utah’s largest cities, like Salt Lake City and Provo, are known to have some of the worst air pollution in America, smaller towns like Escalante offer cleaner air and a more intimate connection to some of the Beehive State’s most spectacular scenery. One midcentury modern-inspired house that just sailed onto the market in the somewhat remote Garfield County destination fits the bill with geothermal heating and cooling and a 20kW solar system, plus a bonkers $60,000 LED lighting package.

The three-story abode on N. Fire Rock Lane West, capped by a Butterfly roof, was built in 2018 with outstanding red rock mountain vistas, part of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The 6,025-square-foot main house is accompanied by a renovated guest house and a host of outbuildings that range from a geothermal greenhouse to a 1,500-square-foot garage/shop.

Huge windows and the use of natural wood enhances the connection to the rugged surroundings.

Built with sustainability in mind and equipped with an array of smart home features, the 18-acre property first hit the market in early 2024 at $3.2 million but was removed by year’s end, following three price cuts. Re-listed at the top of this year for $2.4 million, another $50,000 has since been knocked off, leaving it with a current price of $2.35 million. Trey Leonard of Engel & Völkers holds the listing.

The main house’s rustic-modern facade, comprising a stacked stone and brick-red metal siding, allows it to both blend in and stand out from the mountainous terrain that rises behind it. A dramatically backlit staircase leads up to a large wooden front door that spills into the living room. Sturdy wood beams support the wood-clad vaulted ceiling, while reclaimed Douglas fir wood floors are warmed with radiant heating. As throughout the pad, picture windows fitted with automated blinds frame expansive western views.

The skylight-capped kitchen is decked out with custom cabinetry.

Further in, the chef’s kitchen—once nominated as Wolf’s Kitchen of the Year—is dotted with high-end appliances from the luxury appliance brand and others like Sub-Zero. The custom zebra wood cabinetry is topped by Caesarstone counters that waterfall over the ends of two huge islands, one with an integrated chopping block and a floating snack bar. One of its unique features is what marketing materials describe as a “dedicated pasta bar,” while sliding doors open to Ipe wood decks, where a pizza oven and Argentine grill are found.

Three bedrooms and baths are spread across the main residence, with another bedroom, plus additional sleeping space, in the guesthouse. Outbuildings like the greenhouse and garage/shop stand nearby, in addition to a hay barn and stables. Situated about 300 miles from both Salt Lake City and Las Vegas, the secluded country estate is an ideal spot for privacy seekers and nature lovers who enjoy stargazing and exploring national parks.
