"Sexy" salt claims assaulted

You’re wasting your money, according to a report by UK consumer organisation Which? and salt-reduction pressure group Consensus Action on Salt and Health.

Rock salt and sea salt are no healthier than table salt, says the groups. They found that rock, sea and table salt all contain the same amount of sodium chloride, so all would have the same negative health effects.

Rather than use rock or sea salt, the healthiest option would be to reduce salt use, according to a statement by CASH chairman Dr Graham McGregor. The CASH press release debunks five common myths about gourmet salts: that they contain less sodium, that they contain essential minerals, that they taste better or stronger so you use less, that they are “natural” and so better for your health, and that salt is needed to flavour foods. Spokespeople from the rock and sea salt industries have disagreed with these findings.
