Inside the June issue of Men's Health

A few years back, Men’s Health set out to identify the 10 skills every man should have in his quiver.

After much consultation – was being able to open one non-screwtop beer with another a genuine candidate? (close, but no) – we arrived at a list that included tying a hitch knot, launching a torp and unbogging a vehicle.

It did not include butchering a pig.

After reading “Cook Like A Man” in this month’s issue, I’m thinking it should have. Because you don’t have to believe in the zombie apocalypse to allow that, not too deep inside, all of us are attracted to the thought of being able to fill our own plates without relying on 24-hour supermarkets or the Delivery Hero app.

As writer Matt Goulding discovers in visiting what he describes as “the manliest restaurant in the world” – the legendary Fäviken restaurant in Sweden’s frozen interior – there are unimagined pleasures to be gained from reacquainting yourself with the basic survival skills of finding and preparing your own food. Not least of all the lip-smacking joy that comes with carving great chunks of meat straight from the spit-roast.

Pull up a chair and tuck in to a story that, at the very least, will send you in search of the freshest food in your neighbourhood.

Continuing the primal theme, we also caught up with Australia’s current world woodchopping champion. Brad De Losa’s ability to fell trees with one mighty swing (well, not too many anyway) recalls another skill at risk of being lost. A must-read for anyone chasing a steel core and bell-ringing power – or contemplating how they’re going to keep the aforementioned zombies at bay.

Rounding out the retro feel, we spent time with Australia’s leading practitioner of MOVNAT, a natural movement training system that recalls nothing so much as one of our ancient forbears roaming the land in pursuit of a meal. Combining elements of Parkour, CrossFit and barefoot running, Movnat provides another reminder that a fit and healthy body is one thing. What you do with it, well, that’s the measure of a man.
