Is it safe to eat that?

FROZEN VEGETABLES AND DINNERS
Most will have a "best by" date on the packaging or bag, but these types of freezer food are good for up to a year after purchase.

FROZEN YOGHURT/ICE CREAM
Rely on the freshness date. The stuff will taste gummy if it's been in the freezer too long.

MILK AND BUTTER
Dates on dairy products don't signify expiration. Rather, they are recommended "sell-by" dates. Milk is usually good for a week afterwards; butter lasts a month.

AN OPENED JAR OF PASTA SAUCE
Ditch it after two weeks. Mould tends to collect on the sides of the jar and these bacteria-carrying spores often wind up in the sauce.

ORANGE JUICE
OJ will last a month, but its vitamin C may not. Juice loses its nutritional value if it isn't tightly capped or in a glass container.

CHEESE
A block of this will have a freshness date on it, and, generally, if there's no mould or odour you're safe for a few weeks after purchase if it's well wrapped. If there is mould, just cut off a generous chunk and salvage the rest.

YOGHURT
It's still safe for two weeks after the sell-by date.

EGGS
Unless they smell bad (think bodily gases) you can use them for a month after purchase.

RESTAURANT LEFTOVERS
Your doggy bag will be good for two to three days afterwards if the container's well sealed.

COLD CUTS/MEAT
Usually good for a week, although low-salt versions might not last as long.

A BOTTLE OF RED WINE
Red wine will oxidise faster, so cork it immediatedly after opening it to preserve the taste (oxygen turns wine bitter). Drink the remainder within two to three days.

CONDIMENTS
Mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, salad dressing, jams and conserves are generally good for a year.

BREAD
If you buy it bakery-fresh, keep it in the fridge because it doesn't contain the preservatives of commercially produced breads. If you freeze it you won't lose vitamins or nutrients and it will keep for a month.

LEFTOVER PIZZA
If wrapped securely, it's good for a week (or a month in the freezer).

TOMATOES, ONIONS, POTATOES, FRUIT
Don't keep any of these in the fridge because chilling destroys their flavour.
