BEFORE FROST'S WEIGHT LOSS

Frost lived life in the fast lane. “Fast food, fast living” is how the 30-year-old sales rep describes his descent into dimpled excess. He spent long hours on the road, stopping only to fill up on fuel and junk. “It was more convenient to get dim sims or Maccas than to pack a salad for lunch,” he says.

He then boozed it up in the evenings, downing a six-pack of beer a night and binge drinking on weekends. A pack-a-day cigarette habit completed his failed weight loss story.

THE BODY TRANSFORMATION

At the beginning of 2010, a mate commented that Frost looked like he’d lost a bit of weight. Frost was surprised. He’d just come back from a holiday and was feeling “fatter than ever”. But the praise got him thinking. When his mate offered advice on eating fresh foods and cutting out processed junk food, Frost listened. “I thought, 'I might as well have a crack at it',” he says.

In March 2010, Frost began implementing his friend’s advice and started walking to lose weight. He also stopped drinking alcohol during the week and did sit-ups and push-ups every morning. “People started to notice I was losing weight, which gave me the boost to keep going.” He then bought a bike and started riding for an hour every night.

Finally, he decided to join East End Boxing Gym in the Melbourne suburb of Croydon. “I’ve always been passionate about boxing, but was never fit or dedicated enough to give it a go,” he says. He started doing a couple of boxing circuits a week. Then, as his confidence grew, he changed his goal from “just getting fit” to weight loss. Getting down to his fighting weight meant taking up running. He started at 1.6 kilometres and worked up to 20km on weekends.

THE RESULT

In just over 18 months, Frost lost 54 kilograms and saw his waist size drop from 38 to 28. On the way, in April last year, he had his first interclub fight at 67kg – which he won. Then, in August, Frost made his amateur-boxing debut in the novice state titles, fighting at 63.5kg. He lost a close points decision. His current record stands at one win, two draws and three losses. “Amateur boxing is all about scoring points, rather than hurting your opponent, so I think I’m going to have to change my tactics,” he says.

The best part? Quitting smoking, which Frost doubts he could have accomplished without the focus provided by the fight. “I’d tried to quit five or six times before I started boxing and losing weight,” he says. “I didn’t have real desire or reason before that.”

WEIGHT LOSS TIPS

Never give up. “Find something you love and use it to set goals,” he advises. And put yourself in a positive team environment. “I couldn't have achieved the weight loss I did without the support of the East End Boxing crew.”
