“I Have Cried Too Many Tears To Count”: Meghan Markle Just Shared The Most Emotional Tribute To Her Beloved Dog Guy, Who She Rescued From A Kill Shelter In 2015
Meghan Markle has paid emotional tribute to her beloved rescue dog Guy after his sad death.
The Duchess of Sussex took to her newly launched Instagram page to share the news with her followers, posting a video montage of beagle Guy with herself, her husband Prince Harry, and their two children, 5-year-old Archie and 3-year-old Lilibet.
In the video’s moving caption, Meghan explained that Guy was actually close to being euthanized in the Kentucky kill shelter where he was being housed when she learned of his cruel fate and stepped in to rescue him.
Calling him “the best guy any girl could have asked for,” Meghan detailed the sweet way Guy was by her side throughout key moments in her life — including working on Suits, and falling in love with Harry, who she married in 2018.
Guy joined Meghan when she moved across the pond to Harry’s home country of England, supported her through the well-documented racism and media abuse she faced in the UK, her and Harry’s subsequent move to California, and them becoming parents.
Through all of this, Guy suffered hardships of his own, and spent “several months” having surgeries after a “terrible accident” that left vets convinced that the pup “would never walk again.”
In her post, Meghan shouted out Irish TV vet Noel Fitzpatrick for proving the others wrong and helping Guy make a full recovery in Surrey, England.
Needless to say, Meghan has been left overcome with sadness following Guy’s death — admitting that she has “cried too many tears to count” as she thanked her beloved pet for the years of “unconditional love” that he gave her.
She also told followers that they will be given the opportunity to fall in love with Guy, too, because he is set to feature in her upcoming Netflix series With Love, Meghan, which was filmed last year.
Meghan’s full caption reads: “In Memory of Guy. In 2015, I adopted a beagle from a dog rescue in Canada. He had been at a kill shelter in Kentucky and given a few days to live. I swooped him up….and fell in love. They referred to him as ‘the little guy’ because he was so small and frail, so I named him ‘Guy’. And he was the best guy any girl could have asked for.”
“If you followed me on instagram back in the day, you saw a lot of him - and on The Tig too. He was with me at Suits, when I got engaged, (and then married), when I became a mom….he was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort,” she went on.
“He endured a terrible accident shortly before I moved to the UK which had him undergoing surgeries for several months and unable to leave the clinic. Doctors said he would never walk again, but Dr Noel Fitzpatrick said he could do it. H and I would drive late at night, after hours, to see Guy as he recovered in Surrey for months on end,” Meghan added. “I will always be grateful to Noel and his team, the team at Queen West Animal Hospital in TO, our vets now, and my friends and community: Thank you for loving him so.”
“Because many of you will now see Guy in this new series, I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love too,” she continued. “I have cried too many tears to count - the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they’re not there. But they are. And that’s okay too.”
“Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know ❤️🩹” Meghan then concluded, adding an “adopt don’t shop” hashtag.
The accompanying video also gives followers an insight into the whole family’s meaningful relationship with Guy, with Archie being heard sharing his concern that Guy might “fall” during one clip of them in the backseat of a car while Harry is driving.
“Don’t you worry, mama’s got him,” Meghan reassures Archie, going on to acknowledge the kindness of his concern by adding: “Thank you for being such a good boy.”
At the end of the video, viewers can hear an audio recording of Meghan and presumably Lilibet singing a song to Guy, which includes the lyrics: “We love you, Guy, oh yes we do / We love you Guy, and we’ll be true / When you’re not near us, we’re blue.”
Meghan has comments on her Instagram post disabled, but many people took to X to share their response to her poignant post, with one popular tweet reading: “He was really there through thick and thin, at the lowest and highest moments. I’m glad he got to see happiness in the end.”
Another adds: “Gosh I’m crying ugly tears 😭 Whoever is a fan of Meghan knows the importance of her dog, Guy, in her life. Her furry bff that has been by her side in every important aspect of her life. Losing a pet is one of the deepest heartbreaks.”
While somebody else wrote: “It’s as if he held on until Meghan was fully herself again, settled with a family, and reclaiming the life she set aside 💔 He waited until she was ready 🥺”
Our thoughts are with Meghan, Harry, Archie, and Lilibet at this heartbreaking time. You can watch Meghan’s full video tribute here, and in honor of Guy, let me know your favorite memories of your beloved pets in the comments!
