Yahoo Lifestyle Meet Mark Foster, Julia Garner’s Husband
Julia Garner isn’t the only star in her relationship. The Ozark actress has been married to musician Mark Foster since 2019.
The two first met at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013, although they wouldn’t start dating until a few years later. In a 2020 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Garner recalled reconnecting with Foster through Instagram. “I was like, ‘Who’s this guy liking all my photos? Is this a stalker?’” she said. “I clicked on him and I was like, ‘Oh, Mark. Oh, he’s cute. I’m going to follow him back.’ Then he DMd me.”
While Garner dominates the screen, Foster is enmeshed in the music world as the lead singer of band Foster the People. Ahead, we break down everything you need to know about the musician.
He wrote “Pumped Up Kicks.”
Foster—who happens to be the frontman of indie pop group Foster the People—is responsible for the 2011 hit, “Pumped Up Kicks.”
“I wrote that song in eight hours, and for me it wasn’t necessarily more special than any other song,” Foster said in a 2019 interview with Billboard. “The thing that made that song special was the public, and the fact that people thought it was special, and it resonated and it created a conversation. And I’m proud of the conversation that it created. But now I’ve been very seriously thinking of retiring the song forever.”
He’s from Ohio.
Foster grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He eventually moved to Los Angeles when he was 18 years old to pursue a career in music, according to NPR.
Foster’s hometown happened to be a point of connection for the couple, although Garner grew up in New York. “In our first conversation, we realized that my grandmother lived in the same small town that his dad lives in, just outside of Cleveland,” Garner said in a 2020 interview. The two wound up seeing each other in Cleveland every Christmas thereafter. “It kind of became a tradition.”
He wrote their wedding song.
The couple officially tied the knot at New York’s City Hall in 2020. For the intimate reception, they had their first dance to “Lovers in a Stream,” an unreleased song that Foster wrote for the special occasion.
“It was a surprise,” Garner said. “Mark wrote, produced, and sang it. It was very surreal, and the most beautiful present I’ve ever received. It felt like I was floating up in the air—it was the most magical moment I’ve ever had. The only people who heard this song were at the wedding, but it will come out soon. It’s a beautiful love song, and I’m excited for the world to hear it.”
He is a Grammy-nominated artist.
Foster holds three Grammy nominations. He earned two nominations in 2012 in the categories of Best Alternative Music Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The following year, he earned his third nomination in the Best Short Form Music Video category.
