MasterChef's Grace details chronic health struggles during filming: 'Really hard'

EXCLUSIVE: Grace Jupp opens up about her time in the cooking competition.

She was known as the queen of positivity on this year’s season of MasterChef, but not everything was going smoothly for Grace Jupp during filming.

The 24-year-old has lived with endometriosis and adenomyosis for the past six years, undergoing surgeries and often managing severe pain.

Speaking with Yahoo Lifestyle following her elimination during Tuesday night’s episode, Grace admits she found it “pretty challenging” to persevere through each filming day.

“They were super long days and obviously really big challenges with lots of pressure, and to be honest, I didn't really think that I would physically and mentally and emotionally be able to get through some of those days,” she shares.

“So finishing every challenge was actually just a huge win for me in itself. That was probably one of the biggest takeaways, just being able to push through some extra challenges of my own.”

Grace adds that while she knew she would experience hard days in the competition where her health would “flare up”, she was determined to follow her dream of going on the show.

“I knew coming in that that was the extra piece of baggage I was bringing into the competition and I think I sort of had an attitude that this is something I have in my life no matter what and I can either live a life where I see it as a hurdle or I can just get on with it,” he says

“And while it's still going to be there, it's not going to dictate the opportunities I pursue. And it's been really nice to hear from other people that that's inspired them in taking on their own opportunities and their own adventures in life. It’s incredible to be part of a community of women who look after each other and reach out and it's just been so beautiful to see all the support.”

Grace and Amy's post-show plans

Despite not walking away with the title and $250,000, Grace left the competition with a new best friend in her fellow competitor Amy Tanner. The pair were roommates during filming and had an “instant connection” where they became like family.

“You're away from family, you're away from friends, and so the only way to keep sane and even just to focus on your mental health was making the people around you your family,” she details.

“We had every meal together, we would watch movies and go out for dinners and it just bonded us so much throughout the experience.”

Grace adds that she and Amy want to “take on the world together” post-show and continue working alongside one another.

“We’re so excited,” she says. “Whatever we end up doing I know we will be in and out of each other's pockets.

“She's already got so many incredible things lined up, I'm so proud of her, and so she's constantly texting me being like, ‘Are you free this date? We're gonna pop up here and we're gonna do this there’. So I'm sure whatever the future holds, it's definitely going to be combined with Amy and I.”
