‘The Masked Singer’ Reveals Identity of Fuzzy Peas: Here Is the Celebrity Under the Costume
SPOILER ALERT: Details follow for Season 13, Episode 2 of “The Masked Singer,” “Shrek Night,” which aired February 19 on Fox.
Oscar De La Hoya earned a Grammy nomination back in 2001 for best Latin pop album — so he does know a thing or two about singing. But nonetheless, he faced tough competition on Season 13 of “The Masked Singer,” and so on Wednesday, he was the latest celebrity to be revealed on the hit series.

De La Hoya, who was unmasked as Fuzzy Peas, says he knew he couldn’t compete against some of the golden voices he was up against. “When they asked me to do the show, I was like, ‘OK, wait a minute. I do have experience with singing.’ I cut an album back in the day, and I got nominated for a Grammy.,” he told Variety. “And so I said to myself, ‘OK. I have a little voice. I can do something right here. I’m going to have fun.’ And so, going into the competition, I felt a little confident. I was prepared, but the voices I was hearing backstage, I was like, ‘What the hell am I doing here? These guys can sing!’”
For Fuzzy Peas, no one got it right. Jenny McCarthy-Wahlberg suggested Antonio Banderas, Robin Thicke thought it was John Leguizamo. Rita Ora named Cesar Milan. Ken Jeong named Pitbull.
“Boxing prepared me for ‘The Masked Singer,’” De La Hoya said. “Going on stage or inside the ring, in front of thousands of people or millions watching at home. Going on stage in ‘The Masked Singer,’ you get nervous, butterflies on your stomach. It’s that same feeling when I used to go inside the ring. I kept on telling myself, ‘just laugh, just smile, just have a good time.’ Once the music starts, you’re in the zone.”
De La Hoya sang “I’m a Believer,” by Smashmouth, for his performance. And if he had returned for another episode, he was planning to sing a Rat Pack song for the next episode.
“It was a blast,” he said. “Fuzzy Peas was the funniest thing. I was laughing and dying inside because it was so cute. The three faces on each pea had a different personality. And I was like, ‘wow, that’s me.’ I’m the fuzzy pea!”
Oscar De La Hoya as Fuzzy Peas joins Cedric the Entertainer as Honey Pot as the celebrities unmasked on “The Masked Singer” Season 13.
“Shrek Night” opened with Ken Jeong singing “All Star” by Smashmouth, followed by his fellow panelists.
Back for Season 13 are host Nick Cannon, alongside panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong, Rita Ora and Robin Thicke. Ora was at the desk for a third consecutive season to fill in for Nicole Scherzinger.
New this season, a mysterious masked character dubbed “Detective Lucky Duck” will appear throughout the season to give clues and help the panelists “quack” the case of who’s under the masks. Also new: The “Crack the Case” clue cases, in which more clues are shared about the eliminated contestant.
Fuzzy Peas’ clue case included a golf ball in a golf glove. “I love this sport, it’s one of my passions I feel like a master when I put on the second most important glove I own and my swing gets better every day,” he said.
“The Masked Singer” Season 13 themed episodes include a tribute to franchises “Shrek” and “Ghostbusters,” as well as the Grand Ole Opry as it hits its 100th anniversary. Also on tap are a tribute to the Rat Pack and themes such as “Voices of Olympus: Unmasking the Gods,” “Carnival,” “Boy Bands,” “Decades,” “Lucky 6 Speed Guessing,” a “Clash of the Masks” and the return of “Soundtrack of My Life.”
Masked contestants in Season 13 include Honey Pot, Space Ranger, Cherry Blossom, Coral, Fuzzy Peas, Ant, Paparazzo, Griffin and Bat, with more to be announced later.
Here were the performances on Wednesday’s Episode 2, “Shrek Night”:
Coral
Song: “Accidentally in Love,” by Counting Crows (featured in “Shrek 2”)
Panel guesses: Anna Kendrick, Dove Cameron, Hailee Steinfeld, Lili Reinhart
Fairy tale clue: “Coral and the Silver Screen.” “Well, with a little magic and a lot of hard work, you too can sing and dance on the silver screen.”
Coral voiceover: “What can I say, I’m bringing some BDE tonight! Some Big Donkey Energy. What else would I mean? We both love tea up and have zero filter. So when a spell was cast and I met this leading man I thought was really cool, just like Donkey did with Shrek, I forced him to be my friend. But then I started to notice his strong confidence and grit made me feel safe. I think he started secretly liking all my dumb jokes. It was pretty predictable what happened from there. Yep, we accidentally fell in love. OK, so not exactly like Donkey and Shrek. More like Fiona and Shrek. But you get the point. So tonight this is for my handsome ogre, my tall drink of swamp water. My Shrek.”
Previous song: “Mad World,” by Tears for Fears
Previous panel guesses: Bebe Rexha, Carly Rae Jepsen, Sabrina Carpenter, Halsey
Paparazzo
Song: “Hallelujah,” by Leonard Cohen (featured in “Shrek”)
Panel guesses: James Marsden, Seth Green, Elijah Wood
Fairy tale clue: “The Voice-Over Prince.” “So, adults know me for my acting. But the kids know me for my voice.”
Paparazzo voiceover: “At its core, ‘Shrek’ teaches you not to judge what you see on the outside. It’s what’s on the inside that matters most. And a certain hero of mine showed me this. Someone who made a deep impact on my life. See, once I had a chance to work with the Robin of all Robins — sorry, not you Robin Thicke. The Robin Williams. He could tell I needed some guidance. So he sat me down and opened up about his own struggles. Here was this megastar at the height of his career, who on the outside was this big ball of energy. But inside was battling this intense darkness. In that moment, I learned the importance of kindness. You never know what people are going through. And that’s a lesson I’ve carried my entire life. Robin was my superhero. Who taught me to see the bigger picture. And I have faith he’s looking down on me tonight. So this is a prayer for anyone like him, who shines on the outside but who struggles to see their own light.”
Previous song: “The Door,” by Teddy Swims
Previous panel guesses: Taron Egerton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kieran Culkin
Fuzzy Peas
Song: “I’m a Believer,” by Smashmouth (featured in “Shrek”)
Panel guesses: Cesar Millan, Pitbull, Antonio Banderas
Fairy tale clue: “Fuzzy Peas and the Even Fuzzier Statue.” “I have a lot of awards, but my favorite one may be the statue that I received. It looks just like me.”
Fuzzy Peas voiceover: “Shrek night. To have landed here is the stuff of magic. Because if there’s anyone who can capture the charisma of Shrek’s sidekick Puss in Boots, it is I, Fuzzy Peas. We’re both scrappy, known to throw down any fight and oh so charming. Since I entered the scene, I’ve been enchanting the edamamas left and right. I thought I’d never settle down, until I saw her face. And everything changed. At first I thought, am I losing my mojo? But looking into her smile and her big, beautiful eyes, I felt something I had never felt before. True love! She made me a believer. And now, I believe anyone can find their fairy tale ending.”
Previous song: “La Bamba,” by Ritchie Valens
Previous panel guesses: Mario Lopez, George Lopez, John Leguizamo
Ant
Song: “Wide Awake,” by Katy Perry
Panel guesses: Kesha, Lindsay Lohan, Evan Rachel Wood
Fairy tale clue: “The Golden Ant” “Well, I suppose it’s because my golden voice got me two certified platinums.”
Ant voiceover: “Every classic fairy tale has a villain. I know I certainly had mine. Like Princess Fiona, I too was trapped in a tower. Frozen, isolated, because of someone else’s dark motivations. He was my own Lord Farquaad, who sought to control my power. He was oppressive, vain and cruel. He told me in order to get ahead that I would have to obey. Be submissive, sweet, and above all, silent. But secrets make you sick. And recently I took a look at myself in the mirror, and I realized that it was time to break out of my prison and take control of my own story. Looking back, I wish that other people wouldn’t have to suffer like I did. I’m here to write the next chapter of my own fairy tale on my own terms.”
Previous song: “Just Give Me a Reason,” by Pink
Previous panel guesses: Lea Michele, Lindsay Lohan, Kesha, Ashanti
