Marvel's latest Thunderbolts* trailer is an homage (and ripoff) of A24's success
The newest trailer for Marvel's upcoming Thunderbolts* is touting some very un-Marvel titles and seemingly distancing itself from a few recent MCU flops.
Instead of promoting the Florence Pugh-Sebastian Stan project as a product of the studio that brought fans Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home or even the more recent Captain America: Brave New World, the Disney brand is taking a different route.
The new trailer instead touts the movie's connections to indie film darlings like Minari, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Midsommar, A Different Man and You Hurt My Feelings. What do all of those titles have in common? They all carry the banner of A24 Films — the independent company that's completely captivated cinephiles since breaking into the mainstream in the 2010s.
In fact, the whole tone of the Thunderbolts* trailer seems to rip off the indie film aura.

Fans immediately noticed how similar the trailer is to the teaser to last year's Kinds of Kindness, the follow-up to Yorgos Lanthimos' Oscar-winning Poor Things. Both films were produced by Disney's indie film distributor Searchlight Pictures.
A24 noticed all of it, too. And unleashed a perfect (and NSFW) response to Disney shouting out some of their most famous titles by posting a meme from Euphoria – another A24 production.
None of this is an accident, of course. In an interview with Empire, Pugh described Thunderbolts* as "this quite badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes". For all the power and success of the MCU since 2008, the latest slump clearly calls for a change. Disney is banking on the indie feel to get fans back on board and, honestly, there are much worse strategies it could've tried.
