In Martha, a new Netflix documentary out October 30, Martha Stewart charts her path from a young stockbroker turned caterer to the face of a media empire. Though its focus is Stewart's business acumen, one of the film's central conflicts is her marriage and divorce from Andrew Stewart.

The pair met as young students, marrying when Martha was just 19, and the relationship shaped who she would become in undeniable ways. She was drawn to his sophistication and fell in love with him right away. He seemed to introduce her to a whole new world. On their five-month honeymoon in Europe, for instance, Martha experienced food, architecture, and gardening in an entirely new way. She left with the impression that "this is what I'd like to spend my life thinking about."

Together, they bought a fixer-upper in Connecticut, which would nurture her love of gardening and renovation and serve as the backdrop for the start of her lifestyle empire. "If I didn't have Turkey Hill I wouldn't be me right now," she says in the documentary. Andrew's work in publishing also played a role in Martha's rise to power, as it was by catering one of his parties that she met a publisher who suggested she write a cookbook. The rest was history.

Martha and Andrew separated in 1990 after several bouts of infidelity. Still, it's clear he shaped her path to becoming who she is today. Ahead, everything we know about Martha Stewart's ex-husband, Andrew Stewart.

He met Martha through his sister.

In the documentary, Martha explains how a classmate of hers at Barnard asked if she could set Martha up with her brother, who was a student at Yale Law School. Martha agreed, and he took her to dinner. "It was exciting to meet a sophisticated young man," she said. "By the end of dinner, I was madly in love." She began visiting him each weekend at Yale, and in 1961, after a year of dating, they married.

The couple welcomed their first and only daughter, Alexis, in 1965. Andrew and Alexis were estranged for at least some time. In a 1995 interview with People, he called their estrangement "a source of tremendous pain," saying, “I think of her every single day, many times.”

They divorced in 1990 and haven't spoken since.

During their marriage, Martha says Andrew began an affair with her assistant, Robyn Fairclough, who was living on the property. In letters to Andrew that were featured in the documentary, she described how pained she was by his infidelity, saying "I am agonizingly jealous of your other women… I’m worried and lonely, alone, hopeless.” Martha admitted to also having had a brief affair with "an attractive Irish man," and even kissing a stranger she met in a church on their honeymoon.

The couple separated in 1987, and finalized their divorce in 1990. In October 2024, Stewart told People that she hadn't spoken to her ex in over 20 years. In an earlier interview, she said they hadn't spoken since their divorce.

He remarried twice since.

In May of 1993, Andrew married Fairclough, a painter and Martha's former assistant. In interviews for the documentary, Martha explains that their relationship began while she and Andrew were still married and Fairclough was living on their property while she worked for Martha: "Andy betrayed me right on our property. Not nice.”

It's unclear when Andrew and Fairclough got divorced, but he later entered a relationship with the publisher Shyla Nelson (now Shyla Stewart). They married in 2016, share five children, and work together at Fieldstone Publishing, where Shyla serves as President and CEO.
