Kathryn Bigelow, 63, wants to end elephant poaching, and she wants your help.

The Oscar-winning filmmaker – Bigelow was the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director for her film The Hurt Locker in 2009 – has launched a short film and website called Last Days Of Ivory, campaigning to stop the illegal ivory trade and the rampant elephant poaching that fuels the trade.

“An elephant disappears every 15 minutes,” Bigelow told Variety . “It is our hope that this film helps to bring an activist into existence at least that often.”

The 3-minute short – produced by Bigelow’s longterm collaborate Megan Ellison – uses animation, a decision Bigelow says was deliberate as she didn't want any elephants to be harmed in the process of filming.

“The internet is filled with graphic images of slaughtered elephants and yet the killing continues,” Bigelow said. “There are real things we can all do to stop wild elephants from disappearing from our world.”

These include: spreading the message using the #LastDays hashtag, donating to the cause and sharing the badges on social media. Find out more here.
