What Does It Mean To Do Things Like A Girl?

A social media campaign urging people to reconsider what it means to do something "like a girl" has gone viral.

Created by the tampon brand Always (yes, weird we know, but hear us out) the short film challenges the notion of what it means to be a girl in today's society, and the perceptions we have of ourselves.

To demonstrate the point, Always asked a number of participants to re-enact various tasks "like a girl" would.

While the older participants interpreted running like a girl as flapping their arms around, it's the younger participant's reactions that are really interesting: they all run as fast as they can.

Even better, they all seem confused when they're challenged with the notion that girls are seen as weaker than boys.

"It sounds like you're trying to humiliate someone," says one young participant when asked to define what "like a girl" means.

The older participants are later challenged by the notion of how the term might impact on the younger girls' self-esteem, with all of them admitting it came with a derogatory connotation when it should be used as a compliment.

"I do things like a girl because I AM a girl," says one participant. "Keep doing things like a girl because it's working. It's not something to be ashamed of. Who says you can't win the race if you run like a girl?"

Amen sister.
