My, how the fashion world has changed. In Anne Hathaway’s newest film, a shiny comedy-drama called The Intern out later this year, you’d be hard-pressed to find even a hint of her old Andy Sachs’ wide-eyed incompetency and clunky shoes circa The Devil Wears Prada era. Instead, meet Jules Austin: Hathaway’s glossy new character who is the Miranda Priestly (but sweet, never mean) of fashion start-ups in New York.
So who, pray tell, plays the dowdy Andy Sachs character in this new film? Robert De Niro. Yes, you read that right. Oscar-winning actor and septuagenarian Robert De Niro.
The Intern hopes to turn clichés about the fashion world – and its key pop culture signifiers such as The Devil Wears Prada – on its head. When Jules hires De Niro’s Ben as her new intern, she’s surprised and, slowly, comforted by the business and life wisdom he brings to the table.
And, for anyone wondering whether De Niro has anything to bring to the fashion table, think again. His diatribe on men tucking in their shirts is the best thing we’ve seen all week.
