The Cost Of Kim Kardashian's Hair

When Kim Kardashian debuted her brand new bright blonde locks at Paris Fashion Week, we were a little perplexed.
Such a dramatic colour change would normally be undertaken over a period of months - so it was surprising to see her exit the salon mere hours later with what appeared to be perfectly conditioned platinum locks.

But just three weeks after her debut, it seems Kardashian's radical change is taking its toll on her hair. The 34 year-old has touched it up no less than once a week since her initial transformation, spelling disaster for her locks, which have begun to exhibit signs of wear and tear.
"Being blonde is a full time job!" Kardashian wrote next to a photo of herself in the hairdresser's chair mere days after she first went platinum.
Alison Roughley, senior scientist at Procter & Gamble, says bleaching lifts the cuticle away to allow the colour molecules to enter, effectively robbing it of its protective surface.
"When hair is coloured, this layer is lost, making strands more porous and, consequently, drier," explains Roughley. "Over time, it can become more difficult for the cuticle to flatten properly, and lessens its ability to hold onto the pigment."
Kardashian isn't the only star to suffer in the name of beauty - Mad Men star January Jones has changed her hair colour so many times that at one stage her hair was "falling out in clumps".
Jones said at the time that as a result of the constant bleaching, she would have to "shave off (her hair) and wear a wig."
"I've been blonde, red with extensions for this film, then blonde, then black, and now blonde again," Jones explained.
While the Mad Men actress might not be up for the maintenance anymore, Kardashian's extensive beauty regime proves she might be one of few celebrities who can keep it up.
