Melbourne Cup is a *lot* of fun, but it also takes a *lot* of planning.

We spoke to Rachael Finch to find out her tips for a stress free day at the races. (She’s been to Flemington the past five years in a row, so it’s safe to say she’s a seasoned professional).

1. If you’re buying new shoes, wear them around the house the day before.
“Wear your shoes in, definitely,” Rachael said. “I’ve learnt that the hard way.”

2. Take blotting papers.
“This is a good one just for the oily patches.”

3. Dress for comfort.
“I would say that comfort is a big thing – you know, feeling comfortable – it’s a very much a marathon in terms of surviving in high heels. I think it’s making sure you’ve got something that’s semi comfortable on that you know you can last the day in.”

4. Balance your outfit.
“I think it’s more of a sophisticated, polished way of dressing and I think that tradition needs to be upheld. If you’ve got a little bit of a strapless dress, perhaps compensate that with a longer hemline.”

5. If you’re travelling, take care of your hat.
Rachael is the face of Virgin Australia’s new Hat Valet service, which helps customers transport their hat from Sydney to Melbourne. “It can be pretty annoying travelling with a hat in a massive box down to Melbourne,” she said. “It’s such an easy service where you can check in, give your hat box to the lady at reception, have them take care of all the hassles, get off the plane and just have it there ready to rock ‘n’ roll, untouched, in perfect condition.”
