Jessica Knoll’s first novel – Luckiest Girl Alive – hasn’t even been released in bookstores yet and already it’s set to be a runaway success. Why? The story, which centres around a beautiful and successful woman with a shady past, has already been snapped up by a film company. The producer? None other than Reese Witherspoon.

The Oscar-winning actress has acquired the film rights to the book with Lionsgate film company alongside her own production company Pacific Standard (founded with her Australian business partner Bruna Papandrea). Luckiest Girl Alive will be the latest in a string of female-centric movies that the company has produced. Their first – Gone Girl – was also an adaptation of a thriller novel (which went on to occupy the top spot in the New York Times Bestseller list for a jaw-dropping 91 weeks when it was released in 2012). The company has since gone on to make two more films: the Oscar-nominated Wild and the forthcoming buddy comedy Hot Pursuit.

"Luckiest Girl Alive is the kind of book that grabs you and doesn't let go," Witherspoon said in a statement. "[The narrator] and the thrilling narrative that she drives are exactly the kind of story our company, Pacific standard Films, wants to produce."

Knoll’s Luckiest Girl Alive won’t be available in Australia for a few months. But it’s already soared to the top of our must-read list.

Luckiest Girl Alive (Pan Macmillan, $29.99) will be released on June 1.
