There's no doubt Emily Blunt and Meryl Streep had great chemistry during The Devil Wears Prada. The pair shared a unique comedic timing, which Streep obviously appreciated, because she called Blunt "the best young actress I've worked with in some time, perhaps ever."
The compliment, says Blunt, blew her away, especially considering Streep's reputation in the industry.
''I still die over that compliment," Blunt told The Edit. "It was a little bit mind-blowing. I think my hair blew back, actually, when I read it. You do a little dance and then you realise you've got to try and live up to it."
Blunt says she completely over-acted during filming of The Devil Wears Prada because the character was so dynamic.
"I think I could have played [my character] even bitchier, if that's possible, because it read even bitchier. But I felt it was important that you see glimpses of vulnerability through the sarcasm. I think in humor you find vulnerability, so if I could make her as funny as possible then there would be that side to her that people would feel sorry for. She's so desperate, she's so outrageously desperate, and I always feel sorry for those kinds of people."
Blunt added that Streep could have gone the same route, but chose to downplay her character instead to add to her frightening nature.
"When Meryl read the script, I'm sure on the page the character [she played] could have been far more generic and dragon-like. [But] she did the read-through in a whisper, and that was all she needed to do for it to be thrilling and frightening."
