The 2015 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, and, as usual, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has thrown in a few curveballs.

Jennifer Aniston has followed up her Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG) Nomination with another major nomination for her role as a recovering accident victim in Cake. Emily Blunt and Julianne Moore both scored acting nods, as did British rising star Felicity Jones and Rosamund Pike for her role as ‘Amazing’ Amy in Gone Girl.

Surprising omissions? Naomi Watts – who scored a supporting actress nomination from the SAG for her role in comedy St Vincent – was shut out, as was Angelina Jolie. The six-time Golden Globe nominee received neither an acting nomination (she was tipped to get a nod for her role in Maleficent) nor a directing nomination for her World War II epic Unbroken. In fact, Unbroken was one of the biggest snubs of the night, receiving zero nominations across the board. Birdman is shaping up to be an Awards season favourite, following its SAG success with seven Golden Globe nominations.

And what about surprising additions? Wes Anderson received his first ever directing nomination for The Grand Budapest Hotel. Game Of Thrones also picked up its first nomination for best Drama series since the TV show premiered in 2011. And you can expect to see Lorde on the Golden Globes red carpet come January. The New Zealand singer scored a nomination for her single ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ from the Hunger Games soundtrack.
