Beyonce faced some tough criticism over the weekend, with activist and writer Gloria Jean Watkins, who goes by the pen name ‘bell hooks’, labeling the singer an ‘anti-feminist-terrorist’.

The harsh words were said by hooks (and yes, the lack of capitals in her name is deliberate) during a conversation with trans advocate Janet Mock at The New School in Manhattan.

The two were discussing the topic ‘Are you still a slave?’ with Mocks first referring to Beyonce as an “inspiration”.

On the other hand, hooks had some harsh words for Beyonce, saying she had a negative impact on young girls.

“I see a part of Beyonce that is, in fact, anti-feminist - that is a terrorist, especially in terms of the impact on young girls,” said hooks. “I actually feel like the major assault on feminism in our society has come from visual media and from television and videos.”

Hooks used Beyonce’s recent TIME magazine cover, in which the singer appears in a white bikini, as an example.

“She probably had very little control over that cover, that image,' hooks said. “She’s adding to the construction of herself as a slave.”

The harsh critique is in contrast to the image Beyonce has been trying to portray of late. The singer recently wrote an essay on gender equality for the infamous Shriver Report, touching upon equal pay and education for women.

"We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality,” Beyonce wrote. “It isn't a reality yet. Today, women make up half of the US workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 per cent of what the average working man makes.”

The singer also said it was important to teach boys the rules of equality and respect, so that as they grow up, gender equality becomes a natural way of life.
