John Galliano Blames Addiction For Anti-Semitic Slur

John Galliano has told a court in Paris that his "triple addiction" is to blame for his racial tirade earlier this year, which resulted in the designer being fired from Dior as well as his own label.

Galliano claims he doesn't remember the incident that occurred at a Paris bar in February, explaining to jurors that he felt "pushed to the edge" by the pressures of the fashion industry.

"I have no recollection of these events," he said. "I read about them afterwards."

According to Eonline.com, Galliano admitted that he is a recovering alcoholic as well as a recovering addict. "I would crash after every creative high, and the alcohol would help me to escape," said Galliano, who explained that he was reliant on a cocktail of sleeping pills, alcohol and Valium to "escape".

Two witnesses on hand at the trial say they did not overhear Galliano's racial slur, with one proclaiming she was "shocked" he had been fired from Dior and Galliano.

"This type of row happens all the time in Paris but the only reason it has gone this far is that it concerns John Galliano," said the witness.

Prosecutors at the trial have reportedly requested a fine of no less than 10,000 euros ($A14,000), with the verdict expected on September 8.
