Are You Cleansing Your Skin The Wrong Way?

When it comes to cleansing, women tend to fall into two camps: the twice-a-day club, and those that barely pass a wipe over their face before collapsing into bed. But the truth is, we can all do better.

"Skin that isn't properly cleansed can look and feel unhealthy, dry, dull or unbalanced," explains Kerrie Moore, national training manager at Dr. LeWinn's. "Plus, a build-up of pore-clogging dead skin cells, oils and impurities can lead to pimples, blackheads and enlarged pores."

Set aside 2-3 minutes and "gently massage cleanser in circular movements, concentrating on areas that may require extra attention, like the T-zone for combination skin, and not forgetting the hairline and under the chin", advises Moore. If you regularly skip your morning cleanse, remember that skin is in repair mode overnight, creating new cells, healing damaged ones and shedding dead cells - which must be washed off. Here are five ways to ramp up your regimen.

The kit

Garnier Skin Naturals Micellar Cleansing Water, $11.95. Beloved by the French, alcohol- and soap-free micellar waters use magnet-like molecules to lift sebum and make-up without the need for rubbing or rinsing. This one leaves skin hydrated, too.

Dr. LeWinn's 4 Fusion Cleansing Oil, $29.95. Cleansing oils melt make-up, sunscreens and impurities, and are the first step in the Japanese double-cleansing method (so follow with your regular cleanser). This oil is specifically formulated for dull complexions.

Eminence Organic Skin Care Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant, $91. Use this mild exfoliant daily or rotate with your regular cleanser for smoother, glowing skin. Just add water to activate the oil-absorbing rice powder and dead skin cell-dissolving salicylic and lactic acids.

Clarisonic Aria, $245. Sonic vibrations loosen dirt and oil, leaving skin ready to soak up serums and moisturisers. Pre-cleanse first to avoid staining the bristles with make-up.

Binchotan Facial Puff, $17. Combining purifying charcoal with konjac roots (an Asian vegetable used as a detoxifying agent for centuries), this sponge exfoliates, absorbs excess oil and clears pores. Soak in water before using and replace monthly.
