How is a serum different from a moisturiser?
"They have totally different functions," explains skin expert Sarah Chapman. "Serums are water-based with a low molecular weight, so they can be absorbed instantly into the skin and sink to a cellular level." Not convinced? Try massaging a serum in - you cant; it's already gone. "Moisturisers contain emollients that form a layer of protection on the skin's surface against environmental moisture loss," adds Chapman. So apply a serum, then seal it in with your moisturiser.

How do I figure out my skin type in the first place?
Chapman suggests leaving your complexion clean and completely bare for three hours to see what it does to correct itself. "If it feels like it's desperate for moisture, this is a sign you need a product with lipids [molecules containing oils] on your skin," she explains. Try Lancome Hydra Zen Neurocalm Soothing Anti-Stress Moisturising Cream, $75. "If it's comfortable, you're producing enough oil, so look for products with vitamin A, which regulates oil production," she adds. We like RationaleDNA Reactivating Night Cream, $180. Also, try not to worry about skin types: it's true, we all have inherent genetic tendencies, but instead think of your skin's condition at that moment.

Does anyone use toners anymore?
"We've become conditioned to the cleanse, tone, moisturise skin ritual, but oils and serums are much more worthy of your time and money," advises Dr Diana Howard, vice president of research and development for the International Dermal Institute. Toner was used to sweep away excess cleanser way back when cold creams were popular, but cleansers have become so advanced that the need for toner has virtually disappeared. For a cleanser that won't require a toner, try Neutrogena Pore Refining Daily Cleanser, $14.99.

Why do I have dark circles?
The circulation around the eyes is pretty poor, and the tiny capillaries can break easily. That's why you can get bluish tinges under your eyes when the blood has leaked into the surrounding tissue. The key is knowing whether you can treat them or if it's genetic. Press and roll your ring finger (as it applies the least amount of pressure) under your eye and, if the area changes colour, it can be improved. Skin specialist Su-Man Hsu says it could point to other issues, too: Dark circles reflect an imbalance in the liver and kidney's and are brought about by stress and fatigue. Creams can reduce their appearance, but they won't get rid of the dark circles altogether.

When should I start using anti-ageing products?
You have a real age and a skin age, and the two can be very different. Fair or not, genetics play a huge part in the ageing process. Typical signs of ageing, such as lines and wrinkles, kick in around our mid 20s - but
look at your mother, if you can. Go through old photos and see when she started to age and there's your best answer as to when to introduce time-fighting products. If anti-ageing is just one of your skin concerns, consider serum as a youth fixer. It's the most targeted product due to absorption and high actives anti-ageing wonder stuff.
