They’re the rock-solid Married at First Sight couple who seemed largely unaffected by the endless off-screen drama which has dominated the series.

But Cam Merchant reached breaking point during Monday night’s episode – bursting into tears and finding comfort in the arms of his wife Jules Robinson.

Now the onscreen couple have been forced to respond to backlash and ‘trolling’ after Cam’s constant composure came undone.

“I’m absolutely saddened and angry at all the trolling done tonight regarding my husband showing his emotions,” Jules wrote in an impassioned Instagram post.

“I truly believe that it is a sign of strength in a man to be able to cry and the world needs to be educated.

“Cam cried because he cares. It wasn’t just the experiment….it was a build up of so many things. I’m proud of my husband.

“It’s ok for men to cry. Especially when it’s a selfless act.”

While the official reason for Cam’s breakdown was attributed to the high-intensity atmosphere of the previous night’s commitment ceremony, he later revealed there was also something much more personal going on.

Cam works as a mental health coach to young men, and says that was playing on his mind at the time.

“We’d just run (a workshop) that day, and we had a young boy, was only 15 years of age, and he put his hand and said, ‘I just want to let everyone know, I feel like I’m in a safe place – last night I tried to take my own life,’” Cam told 9Honey.

“It was huge. So you’re talking about all these different components – in our lives, in my life, inside and outside the experiment.”

The ‘components’ Cam is referring to are likely tied the intensive schedule for filming reality TV, hallmarked by 12-hour filming days in an emotionally-charged environment.

Season five contestant Nasser Sultan revealed last year the cast had just $150 a day to support themselves during filming given under the guise of a ‘daily allowance’.

“Out of that, we’ve got to buy our own food and we’ve got to pay our own bills, so it’s really not much money,” he told HIT FM.

“Mate, I have a mortgage. We couldn’t work for three or four months.”

This level of intensity compounded to the point both Cam and Jules considered leaving the experiment early, admitting he felt forced to be ‘strong’ for the other couples.

But luckily for Cam, his vulnerability led to his wife’s admiration for her spouse only increasing, telling 9Honey she was ‘so proud of him’ after his teary-eyed moment.

“I could not be prouder of my husband to go, ‘You know what? I’ve got emotion and I’ve got to get it out.’ And that is OK. It’s OK to not be OK.”
