Alice Yaxley and Sam VanderpumpThe Vanderpump engagement news arrives around six months after the pair went Instagram official back in September, when Sam captioned a mirror selfie with "Hard launch?🚀" as he kissed his now-fiancée on the head.
In the months since their relationship announcement, the reality star and model have posed for snaps from a trip to Dubai and have shared video montages of their other adventures. As he told OK! Magazine, per the Daily Mail, Sam and Yaxley have indeed been dating for six months, but have "gone through such a lot in such a short period of time."
As Sam recalled, he got "really ill" late last year when he got an infection due to a genetic disease that ultimately "led to sepsis and it ended up quite bad." While he "could have died," Sam said the experience of being hospitalized "brought us very, very" close.
"I think I walked out of that looking at Alice and thinking, 'This is the girl I want to marry.' So, my thinking was, 'If I'm saying that now, why on earth am I waiting,' " he said.
In preparation for the engagement, Sam spoke with Alice's father and eventually planned the moment for a private visit to a jewelry shop viewing room. The pair were "emotional wrecks" during the proposal, he added.
Sam previously spoke with the Daily Mail after his health concerns, which were caused by liver and kidney failure, earlier this year, explaining that he spent days in bed with dehydration and severe back pain before his now-fiancée called an ambulance. As he explained, she "saved my life."
"I thought I was going to die," Sam told the outlet. "I didn't think my body could cope and that was the scariest thing. It was terrifying."
After recovering, he said the experience gave him "a new outlook" on life. "In the past, I have used my free time to party and drink and be crazy but now I am going to use my free time very differently," he said, adding that he's planning a charitable event with his reality show. Sam also detailed on Instagram why he decided to document his health journey.
"I want to address why my family took photos of me while I was sick," he captioned a Jan. 26 post. "They were taken to document my journey, to serve as a reminder of how far I’ve come, and to educate others about the seriousness of sepsis. They also provide a powerful source of motivation, showing resilience and the importance of early medical intervention."
"Sometimes, looking back at these moments helps us appreciate life more and reminds us to be grateful for the support and care we received during tough times," Sam added at the time.
