“M3GAN 2.0”: What We Know About the Killer Doll's Sequel — and Who She'll 'Slay' Next

Get ready, horror fans — M3GAN 2.0 is coming soon, and it's going to be killer!

A sequel to the 2023 thriller that follows the titular murdering AI doll, M3GAN (short for Model 3 Generative Android), will be released in theaters on June 27, 2025.

M3GAN — which grossed $30.4 million domestically on its opening weekend — culminated with an action-filled fight between Gemma, the human who created her, and the robot. While a winner was clear following the battle (with the victory going to Gemma, after seemingly destroying her creation), the final scene suggested that M3GAN's intelligence had escaped onto the internet or other devices.

As for where the sequel will pick back up, director Gerard Johnstone told Entertainment Weekly in December 2024 that he felt it was important for M3GAN 2.0 to be "a response to what people really loved about the first movie, but also this evolving conversation and fear that we're having about how A.I. is changing us and changing our children and changing society."

“In a way, M3GAN is a personification of all of those fears," he continued.

From its plot to who from the cast is returning, here's everything to know about M3GAN 2.0.

What will M3GAN 2.0 be about?

The sequel will follow Gemma (Allison Williams) and her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) two years after the events of 2023's M3GAN.

Per the synopsis, Gemma has become a "high-profile author and advocate for oversight of A.I.," while her niece Cady, who is now a teenager, is "rebelling" against her aunt's "overprotective rules."

"Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno), the ultimate killer infiltration spy," the synopsis continues.

Gemma and Cady bring M3GAN back with "a few upgrades," including making her "faster, stronger and more lethal" in order to defeat Amelia, who has become "decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans — or in keeping them around."

Is there a trailer for M3GAN 2.0?

Though the sequel was teased on Feb. 2 at the Grammys, the first official trailer for M3GAN 2.0 was released on April 3, offering a glimpse into the killer robot's return.

The clip opens up with M3GAN admitting that there were "some bugs" in her programming, but stating that it's "hardly fair" for her to take the full blame.

After doing her signature dance moves and sparking gory attacks, M3GAN then declares that "one thing hasn't changed": she'll still do "whatever it takes to protect Cady."

M3GAN finds herself in a new body — a "plastic Teletubbie" — while her creator tells her she needs to prove that she can be trusted before getting an upgrade.

But when Amelia — an autonomous android built based on the design for M3GAN, enters the scene — M3GAN convinces Gemma to put her back into her body (with an upgrade) in order to help stop the evil robot.

After receiving her upgrade, a new and improved M3GAN appears and says, "Let's get to work!" before facing off with Amelia.

By the end of the trailer, M3GAN offers a deal: "You can kill Gemma, but don't touch Cady."

Who is in the M3GAN 2.0 cast?

Many familiar faces are returning for the sequel, including M3GAN herself, played by Amie Donald and voiced by Jenna Davis.

Williams, who stars as Gemma, will also reprise her role. She is joined again by McGraw, who portrays Cady.

Per Deadline, other returning cast members include Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jen Van Epps, Sakhno, Aristotle Athari, Timm Sharp and Jemaine Clement.

Who is directing M3GAN 2.0?

Gerard Johnstone, who helmed the original M3GAN movie, is returning as director.

He is joined by returning faces behind the scenes, including screenwriter Akela Cooper who is once again penning the film.

Horror maven producers Jason Blum and James Wan are also returning to the project. Executive producers include Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Ryan Turek, Mark Katchur, Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath.

When did filming for M3GAN 2.0 wrap?

At New York Comic Con in October 2024, Williams gave fans some insight into M3GAN 2.0 and confirmed that production had wrapped, per The Hollywood Reporter.

She shared that the original film was a learning experience, making it all the more "fun to do it the second time."

Williams explained, "‘Okay, so we know how this is achieved. We know how to do it.’ We can have a little bit more fun with it. And make it bigger and more expansive, without giving too much away.”

When will M3GAN 2.0 be released?
