Lynyrd Skynyrd cancels tour dates, as singer Johnny Van Zant reveals daughter hospitalized with brain mass

Van Zant asked fans to 'keep saying prayers' for his daughter and that 'it means everything to me and my family.'

Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Johnny Van Zant has revealed that doctors discovered a mass on his youngest daughter's brain this week and is asking fans to "say a prayer" for her.

The legendary rock band canceled several concert dates in September, citing the "emergency illness" and Van Zant having to leave the tour to be with his daughter while doctors "continue testing, diagnosis, and treatment."

Van Zant shared the news in a social media post that his daughter Taylor was treated at an emergency room after having a "numbing feeling on her right side," before doctors discovered the brain mass.

"Some of it was bleeding, that was causing the numbing part," Van Zant explained. "Saying this, we've had her with a great neurology team, a group of doctors, and they don't think its the C-word, so that's a good thing."

He added, "But they're still doing a lot of testing, and we're not out of the woods yet, but we're in a lot better position than we thought we were in the beginning."

Van Zant then asked his followers to "keep saying prayers" for Taylor and that "it means everything to me and my family." He also encouraged everyone to keep the band's bus driver Brad Gibson in their thoughts, as well, after Gibson was injured in a scooter accident.

Lynyrd Skynyrd originally formed in 1964 in Jacksonville, Fla., under the name My Backyard with vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, guitarists Gary Rossington and Allen Collins, bass player Larry Junstrom, and drummer Bob Burns. After several lineup changes, they adopted the name Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1968 and released their debut album in 1973.

The band came to define Southern rock and charted a number of hits including "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" before several members of the band, including Van Zant, were killed in a plane crash in 1977. With Van Zant's younger brother Johnny as its new lead vocalist, Lynryd Skynyrd reformed in 1987. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. In 2023, Lynyrd Skynyrd's last original member, Gary Rossington, died at age 71.
