After years of waiting, Logic is finally giving fans the album they've been waiting for.

In 2017, Logic announced he was beginning to work on an album titled Ultra 85. Seven years later, it's finally here — and provides answers to fans' questions regarding the mysterious sci-fi project while remaining consistent with the rapper's discography.

“I would say it is the most Logic album,” Logic tells PEOPLE. “So if you really love Logic, you'll love this. And if you really hate Logic, you'll hate it. I think the best way to describe it is me almost sampling my catalog in a way, me really hitting highlights of songs, topics, styles and flavors that have been fan favorites. I don't think it's fan service in a negative, I think it's me service.”

The unique structure of Ultra 85 not only features Logic’s musical talents but also a sci-fi story in the background of the album. Following the album's release on Aug. 9, Logic will also put out the accompanying Ultra 85 novel on Sept. 17 to give fans a deeper understanding of the project's lore.

“First and foremost, I think I put it in my music just because nobody else was really doing it like that, at least not on a very mainstream major level,” says Logic. “I wasn't hearing that. And I feel a bit of the Joan of Arc, Black White guy [who] doesn't look Black, doesn't fit into a specific criteria, does Rubik's Cubes, likes anime. I was the first one.”

For Logic, the timing of Ultra 85 felt right simply because he was able to freely dive back into his creativity. “I'm ready to do it now because I want to do it, not because I feel pressure or not because sure, it's amazing to know millions of people out there want it as well,” he explains. “This is a true farewell to my time in this industry.”

The rapper also recalls going through a depression during his rise in the music industry, which ultimately led to his decision to step away for the good of both himself and his family. [Logic is married to Brittney Noell, with whom he shares two children.]

“I genuinely don't give a s--- if the album is this big No. 1 success,” says the Grammy winner. “I used to, and when I did, I was at my most depressed. And when I went No. 1 that first time, it was incredible. And then I did it a second time, and it was really cool. And then I did it a third time and I was like, 'Whatever.' And then it was fourth time, and it just becomes a hamster wheel of, 'How many times can I do the same thing?'"

As he's embraced a more self-assured mentality, Logic has started to navigate and experience different mediums of storytelling through his music, novels and most recently, film. The rapper is set to act in Kevin Smith’s upcoming The 4:30 Movie while also working on his own Paradise Records, which he wrote, stars in and will direct.

“My purpose is telling stories,” says Logic. “I just finished my first film. I spent millions of dollars of my own money. I wrote it, I starred in it, I directed it. Kevin Smith edited it and was one of the producers on it. It was the best experience of my life. And I've spent my whole career telling people on albums. And now I'm realizing I want to show them through cinema.”

At the current moment, Logic has no plans to take Ultra 85 on the road for a tour — and wants to continue doing only exactly what he wants.

“My family's good, my boys are growing, my wife is my rock and my best friend,” he says. “I just wake up every single day and don't do anything I don't want to do. I just do what I want to do.”
