Lisa Ann Walter pitched a musical episode of Abbott Elementary, noting that the entire cast has the vocal chops to achieve it. In a pre-Emmys conversation alongside costars Sheryl Lee Ralph, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis moderated by PEOPLE's executive editor of TV and events Breanne L. Heldman in Los Angeles on Thursday, Walter made the case for a double musical episode.

"He has an amazing, amazing voice. Stan, he has a beautiful voice. Stan used to a front a band," Walter said of Davis, citing his days as frontman of R&B band The Fabulous Paramount Revue.

And "Sheryl's not bad," Walter quipped of the singer and former Broadway Dreamgirl, eliciting laughs from the audience. "I used to have a really great four-octave range, but I still say I could sell a song. Everybody in the cast — I've never heard Tyler [James Williams] sing — but I think pretty much everybody can blow. So I say when it's super exhausting going into season 8, it's a double musical episode, each one's an hour."
Abbott Elementary, a mockumentary sitcom centered on a group of eccentric but dedicated educators at a Philadelphia public school, is a star student at the upcoming Emmys this weekend. It earned nine nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series and nods for creator and star Quinta Brunson.

Class is back in session on Oct. 9, when the series returns for season 4. Ralph teased the season's upcoming Halloween episode at the pre-Emmys conversation on Thursday, calling it "so much fun" to do — despite the fact that it was filmed during 107-degree weather during L.A.'s recent punishing heatwave. "And if you saw what all of us were wearing, oh my God," said Ralph. "You would pray for us. But it's fun. We're excited."
The 2024 Emmys airs live Sunday, Sept. 15 on ABC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. It'll also be available to stream next day on Hulu.
