Lily Rabe once alarmed airport security with fake bullet hole in head from “American Horror Story” set

"I hadn't taken the bullet hole out of the back of my head."

Airport security was in for a scare while Lily Rabe was making her bicoastal work commute between New York and Los Angeles.

On the latest episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Dinner's On Me podcast, the American Horror Story alum recalled her whirlwind schedule of working on the FX anthology series and the Broadway production of Seminar at the same time circa 2011. Once, Rabe recalled, she forgot all about the fake bullet hole in her head left from set as she bolted through the terminals.

"There was one time when I set off the alarm at the airport because I hadn't taken the bullet hole out of my the back of my head," Rabe shared. "Like, I was running. My hair was all pinned up. The costumes were so beautiful. And then I was like, oh, oh, oh, there's a bullet hole in the back of my head."

The hectic production schedule made Rabe lose her, uh, head. Rabe would appear on the Broadway stage on Sundays, "get on a plane, fly to L.A., sleep for a couple hours, go to set, shoot all of my stuff on Monday, get on the red eye, come back," Rabe recalled. "And we did it for like nine episodes. He just kept bringing her back."

Rabe made her AHS debut in Murder House in 2011, playing socialite Nora Montgomery, who sports the bullet hole on the back of her head. She'd later return to the anthology series across various seasons and playing different characters, including Sister Mary Eunice, witch Misty Day, the traumatized Shelby Miller, and ghost Lavinia Richter.

The actress told Ferguson that creator Ryan Murphy, who she met after he had cast her prior in an episode of his medical drama series Nip/Tuck, initially only pitched three episodes when he called her up. She would go on to appear across nine seasons.

Rabe can currently be seen on the Apple TV+ legal series Presumed Innocent, about a murder that upends Chicago's prosecuting attorney's office after one of its own, prosecutor Rusty Sabich (Jake Gyllenhaal), is accused of the crime. Rabe plays Dr. Liz Rush, the therapist of Rusty and wife Barbara (Ruth Negga). Based on the Scott Turow novel, the limited series has been expanded for another season, set to revolve around a new case. It's unclear if any of the original stars will return.
