Baby Echidna 'Bonsai' is on the road to recovery at Sydney's Taronga Park Zoo after being attacked by chickens in Newcastle earlier this month.

The four-month-old 'puggle' suffered from scratches on his legs and belly from the aggressive attack as well as dehydration.

Bonsai gets around the clock care from his handler Annabelle Sehlmeier who gives him a special mixture of milk from the palm of her hand.

The little guy has put on a healthy 130 grams in the past two weeks which is great news.

We say 'guy' but the echidna is actually too young for experts to determine its gender.

Aw. Just look at its little face!
