A trainer in New Zealand has managed to upskill a number of RSPCA dogs by teaching them how to fly a plane – and he did it in four months.

Auckland animal trainer and zoologist Mark Vette was tasked with proving how capable the pups are for the UK series, ‘Dogs Might Fly’, and they all passed the test with flying colours.

Reggie, Shadow and Alfie are now certified pilots, flying planes and doing tricks with their paws only.

“At the end of the day we’re trying to show that rescue dogs are smart dogs, this is why we’re doing it,” explained Vette.

“The human-dog relationship is one that has co-evolved over the last 30,000-50,000 years, it’s an incredibly subtle and complex relationship.

“It takes a lot of training and a lot of work and integration to build that collaboration but it’s amazing, the more I’ve flown with the dogs the more intuitive they get.”

Of course, not all dogs are THAT smart. Consider the poor pup below, who can’t quite work out his own reflection…
