Leah Messer Talks About Trying to ‘Let Go’ as Twins Aliannah and Aleeah Navigate High School (Exclusive)
The mom of three tells PEOPLE about the changes that come with her girls growing up
Leah Messer is learning to let go as a mom to twin teens.
Daughters Aliannah and Aleeah turned 15 last month and started high school this past fall. The mother and daughters' journey plays out in the second half of season 2 of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter.
Speaking with PEOPLE about the new season, Messer, 32, says she's learning that "I have to let them live and learn."
"I'm just letting them go. It's time to let them grow their wings and give them that space to learn and grow," she shares. "It's what I'm learning to navigate as they're entering and adapting to high school."
Messer is also mom to daughter Adalynn, 11, with ex Jeremy Calvert.

The new episodes show how hard that can be for Messer, who shares the twins with ex Corey Simms. In particular, this season shows Messer continuing to be at odds with Ali when the 15-year-old, who lives with Titin Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy, tries to assert more independence without mobility aids.
"It's a balance. It's definitely a balance, letting Ali... she wants her independence and you want to give her that. You want to make the world accessible for her, to make that happen," Messer acknowledges.
"But I've also been to 15 years of doctor's appointments with her, in and out of muscle biopsies and CAT scans and MRIs and bloodwork. I've done a lot of research on muscular dystrophy and the impacts it can have, overworking her muscles."
"It's been a balance as her mom to keep her safe and protect her and also allow her to have that freedom. I think we're learning and navigating it together. It's something that I struggle with every single day. I do my best. I'm not perfect, but I'll do whatever it takes for her."
Catch up with Leah and her three girls when Teen Mom: The Next Chapter premieres Thursday, Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. ET on MTV.
