Lauren Sánchez Shares First Call with All-Female Blue Origin Space Crew as Gayle King Asks, 'Is Anyone Else Nervous?'

Lauren Sánchez shared a video of her first call with Blue Origin's all-female space crew.

Last month, it was announced that Sánchez, 55, and five other women — including fellow award-winning journalist Gayle King and singer Katy Perry — will visit space on a Blue Origin rocket this spring.

The crew — which also includes former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist Amanda Nguyen and film producer Kerianne Flynn — expressed excitement for the trip, as seen in clips shared in an Instagram post Sánchez shared on Friday, March 7.

“I just kind of want everyone to take a deep breath and soak this all in for a second,” Sánchez said at the beginning of the call. “Today, you guys, we’re a crew!”

“Wow, I just got chills!” said Nguyen, 33, in response, though King, 70, expressed some apprehension.

“Is anyone else nervous? Or am I the only Nervous Nelly here?” she asked the group, to which Perry, 40, replied, “I’ll be a little nervous, but I’ll be looking at y’all!”

King then quoted Eleanor Roosevelt, who once said, “Courage is doing something that scares you but you do it anyway.”

“I sort of look at it like that about stepping out of my comfort zone and my box,” King explained.

Bowe noted that this will be an opportunity for the team of women to “highlight STEM and education and dreams” while bringing “a little bit of space back to Earth.”

“We’re all going to come back with this profound love of Earth,” Sánchez told the group, “and we’re going to be able to share that with the world — and hopefully touch everyone in a small way that they’ll want to help save the planet.”

Earlier in the clip, Sánchez said Team Blue has some impressive storytellers who will “inspire a new generation of explorers” with the stories they share from this experience.

“I cannot wait to embark on this adventure together and inspire the next generation of explorers,” Sánchez wrote in the caption of her post. “Excited to share our journey with you. This is just the beginning.”

The company previously credited Sánchez, who is the fiancée of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos, for bringing the special mission together.

“[Sánchez] is honored to lead a team of explorers on a mission that will challenge their perspectives of Earth, empower them to share their own stories, and create lasting impact that will inspire generations to come,” Blue Origin said in a press release announcing the mission last month.

This upcoming mission will be the 11th human flight for the New Shepard program. To date, the program has flown 52 people, including Star Trek actor William Shatner as well as Bezos himself.
