Kylie Minogue's triumphant Vegas show proves she's a national treasure

Jacob Elordi is dead right about "our" Kylie.

OPINION

Katy Perry, Adele, Keith Urban, U2, Carrie Underwood, Barry Manilow, Priscilla Presley, Rod Stewart... and our very own Kylie Minogue all spent last weekend in one place: Vegas, baby!

And what a brilliant, hedonistic, escapist, joyous, glam and glorious cabaret ride our most famous entertainment queen gave us. But the one thing that really struck me was how extraordinary it is for any entertainer to even get a show in Las Vegas. Let alone one that's sold out until next year.

No wonder Kylie's show is called Not Just A Residency. Between opening and closing performances by the long-standing Vegas burlesque circus Belle de Nuit, Kylie's gig lasted a solid 75 minutes — in which she hardly took a breath — and left me thinking, thank God for "our" Kylie Minogue.

US chat show host Andy Cohen recently asked Jacob Elordi what his generation of Aussies thinks of Kylie, to which the young actor simply replied that she's a "national treasure". He couldn't be more spot-on — and she should be loved. To me, her extraordinary work ethic and ethos that we've seen over five decades culminated in her brand new spectacle.

Kylie's choreographer Ashley Wallen, production designer Rob Sinclair and music director Steve Anderson nailed the vibe of a Vegas cabaret showroom. With just 1,000 people seated at cocktail tables, banquettes or standing in general admission in the art deco-inspired, revamped Voltaire showroom — complete with plush velvet seats and a long "thrust" stage so we could all see her up close and very, very personal — the show was exquisitely intimate.

The gig was divided into four segments and of course the superstar had a brilliant costume change for each, including black and red latex body-cons, a glam gold gown and a multi-hued sparkle of a dress. They were all heaven.

The set list was jam-packed with bangers, from Kylie's first mega hit Locomotion to so many more, including All The Lovers, Get Out of My Way, In Your Eyes, Come Into My world, Slow, Spinning Around and of course the TikTok anthem Padam Padam, along with four more songs from her latest techno album, Tension.

In a beautiful ode to a Vegas icon, she even included a pure Elvis moment, donning a black crystal encrusted cape to sing Can't Help Falling In Love. Aaaahhh.

While Kylie's foray into the American market peaked when Locomotion reached number 3 on the charts in the late '80s, methinks this show has catapulted her fame in the US again. You could feel the fandom in the room — devoted, dashing and dedicated "lovers" paying anywhere from US$200 for standing room-only tickets to four-figure minimums for cocktail tables.

Kylie is the perfect ambassador for Australia. Never forgetting her Oz roots despite having spent so much of her life overseas, she's a total class act. Even when she met us after the show, dressed impeccably in Dolce & Gabbana, she exuded calm and style.

Now Vegas has put even more "star" into Kylie, if that was even possible. Bravo!
