Kylie Jenner accused of blackfishing after posting extreme tan video

Kylie Jenner has been called out by fans online who have accused her of blackfishing with her extreme tan.

The 24-year-old caucasian reality star, who is currently pregnant with her second child, posted a video on her Instagram story last week in which her skin colour appeared significantly darker.

The term ‘blackfishing’ first became known around 2018, with journalist Wanna Thompson defining it as “when White public figures, influencers and the like do everything in their power to appear Black”.

“Whether that means to tan their skin excessively in an attempt to achieve ambiguity, and wear hairstyles and clothing trends that have been pioneered by Black women,” she told CNN.

A number of fans took to Twitter to criticise Kylie shortly after she posted the video, with many people simply asking: “Why is she so dark?”.

“Nobody talks about Kylie's blackfishing huh,” one person tweeted alongside the Instagram clip.

“Clearly she’s trying to look Black,” another wrote, while someone else questioned, “WHY IS HER SKIN COLOUR LIKE THAT?”

A fourth said: “Can we start gatekeeping black culture more because I don’t have the option to take my skin on and off so I don’t think she should either.”

While some fans blamed Kylie’s tan and make-up for altering her appearance, others suggested that it was just the video’s filter.

Meanwhile, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star is not the only White celebrity who has faced similar allegations recently.

Former Little Mix member Jesy Nelson was accused of blackfishing earlier this month in the music video for her debut solo single, Boyz, which features rapper Nicki Minaj.

The UK pop star sported a noticeably darker tan in the video, as well as grills on her teeth and her hair in braids for some scenes.

Jesy went live on Instagram with Nicki Minaj shortly after the video’s release to say that she never intended to cause offence, and she was tanned simply because she had been vacationing in Antigua beforehand.

“I personally want to say that my intention was never, ever to offend people of colour with this video and my song because, like I said, growing up as a young girl, this is the music that I listened to,” she said.

“These are the videos that I watched and thought were the best. For me personally, 90s/2000 hip-hop, R&B music was the best era of music. I just wanted to celebrate that. I just wanted to celebrate that era of music because it is what I love.”
