“Kung Fu Panda 4” tops domestic box office for 2nd week while “Dune: Part 2” rules internationally
The Mark Wahlberg doggy sports drama "Arthur the King" opened domestically at No, 3 with $7.5M.
Kung Fu Panda 4 kept its kung fu grip on the domestic box office, grossing $30 million in its second week of release, bringing its total to $107.7 million, as per Comscore. Internationally, the Jack Black-starring sequel added another $39.6 million this weekend, for a worldwide cume of $176.5 million.
Dune: Part Two took second place stateside behind Kung Fu Panda 4, with $29.1 million in its third week of release, so far earning $205.3 million. Overseas, the starry sequel to 2021's sci-fi epic based on the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert is already nearing the half a billion mark. This weekend brought it $51.2 million closer, for a worldwide cume of $494.7 million.
The Mark Wahlberg doggy drama Arthur the King, based on the true story of extreme athlete and author Mikael Lindnord and his relationship with a dog named Arthur during an adventure race in Ecuador, opened in third place domestically with $7.5 million. Lindnord chronicled the experience in his 2016 book, Arthur: The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home.
In the film, Michael Light (Wahlberg) convinces a sponsor to back him and a team of athletes (Simu Liu, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Ali Suliman) for the Adventure Racing World Championship in the Dominican Republic and forms an unbreakable bond with the titular pup over the course of ten days and 435 miles,
"Oh my god, I tried to bribe the trainer to sell me the dog," Wahlberg said of his four-legged costar, Ukai. "I offered her whatever she would want. But, of course, that bond is not something that you can separate. I just fell in love with him."
Rounding out the top five, the Blumhouse horror film Imaginary earned $5.6 million, for a two-week total of $19.1 million ($27.4 million worldwide) for the fourth spot and Cabrini, the biopic of Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini, took fifth with $2.8 million, for a two-week total of $13 million.
