Kmart face mask hack perfect for back to school: 'Love this'

The kids are finally back at school in all states and territories after their summer holidays but the last two years of disruptions and life in a global pandemic is still ever-present.

While some students have to do regular rapid antigen tests (RATs), others simply need to be mask ready for their classroom return.

And given the rate that we all take on and off our face masks and the general state of children's school bags, this ingenious Kmart hack is perfect to keep the kids organised and their masks hygienic!

"I just wanted to share with you how I have been using the Kmart reusable snack bags," one mum shared in the Kmart Home Decor & Hacks Australia Facebook page.

"The bags are great for storing disposable facemasks on the go which is good as many places are now not allowing entry to people wearing fabric masks. (Edited to add: I am in WA).

"They are sealable and keep the masks clean and dry and as they are made from a thicker plastic protect them as well.

"They are small and flat enough to keep in handbags, schoolbags, gloveboxes, draws for whenever you may need one."

"Great idea. I was wondering when someone was going to start flogging face mask purses," one person commented.

"Thank you for your post Amanda. I have high school kids so I went and purchased these pouches today,": another added. "Love this idea!," a third wrote.

"Loving your Infection Control, you go girl," another comment read.

Mum Amanda tells Yahoo Lifestyle she was looking for a solution to keeping masks at the ready as she had to frequently attend medical and hospital appointments with family members.

"I wanted something that would allow me to carry a few masks with me at all times, something that was compact and something that would protect the mask from damage," Amanda explains.

"I trialled the normal snap lock bags but found that very quickly they would end up at the bottom of the bag and being so thin ended up with small puncture marks. So I started looking for a solution.

"I thought about a make-up bag or pencil case but was unsure of the plastics used in them. Then I thought about a lunch box but decided against that as they were too bulky. Finally whilst walking around my local Kmart I stumbled, by accident, on the snack bags," she said.

"These were the perfect size and would hold a few masks at a time. Being a thicker plastic than the snap-lock bags, the masks appear to be better protected and as a product for food, I would think they would be safer and more hygienic than a pencil case or make-up bag," Amanda added.

"It makes having a spare or two on hand very easy (especially if the elastic breaks). They are also flat enough to fit in all sorts of places: handbags, nappy bags, school bags, jacket pockets and my glove box. They were cheap as well!"

Well, we're sold!
