Mum’s brilliant Kmart switch for a chocolate-free Easter egg hunt

For many kids, Easter is all about chocolate, but sometimes the amount they recieve - and then of course eat - can be a little excessive. If you have a large family gathering, they're likely to get chocolate not only from you, but also from loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Sometimes the sugar high is just too much, but that doesn't mean that your kids have to miss out on the fun and adventure that Easter traditions bring (the popular cultural rather than religious ones, that is.)

The Easter egg hunt offers opportunities for children to enjoy the fun of a treasure hunt, but not all the finds need to be edible.

One inventive mum shared her version of the Easter egg hunt using low cost Kmart treats that are sure to leave her son feeling like he hit the jackpot.

"When chocolate needs to be limited for a 6 year old," she wrote on the Kmart Hacks And Decor Group on Facebook, "Went with the hot wheels theme! All from Kmart. Cars in eggs!"

And fellow group members loved the idea, with almost 800 likes on the post and over 190 comments.

"Fantastic idea, I’m using this for my cars obsessed 3 year old as he gets to silly and naughty after sugar so this will be amazing," another mum wrote.

"We did this last year and only a few contained eggs. Our 3 year old absolutely love it!," one person replied.

"Oh that’s bloody amazing. I’m 100% doing this,"a third added.

And it's not only gifts for motor-heads that fit perfectly into the Kmart eggs, the discount retailer has lots of bit-sized choices.

"My girl is dairy and nut free so reducing cost for Easter is difficult if we buy her chocolate bunnies. I priced her chocolate bunny and bag of small choccies and went and got her gifts instead," a mum commented.

"Cost me less for little nail polishes and hair bows than it would’ve got me to buy vegan chocolate"

"I’m putting hair clips, little bracelets and some of the mini bubbles and mini slinkies for my two year old daughter found them in the party section at Kmart," another mum of a daughter wrote.

Others took a more adult view of the idea. "Great idea!! Would mini alcohol bottles fit in those? Asking for a friend…"

Helpful mums said that they wouldn't but did point out that other shops had medium sized hunt eggs which would fit them. Now that is a hunt we can get on board with...
