Kmart and Big W shoppers at risk after man breaks Covid-19 quarantine

South Australian health authorities are urging people to get tested after it came to light a man with Covid-19 breached quarantine and visited a number of stores, including a Kmart and Big-W.

The man in his 30s tested positive for Coronavirus on Saturday, along with a child.

The man was a close contact of a confirmed case linked to the cluster at the Intensive English Language Institute at Flinders University.

Authorities have issued a coronavirus quarantine alert for people who attended the Intensive English Language Institute between November 13 and 28.

On Sunday, Chief Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier confirmed the man had not spent the entire 14 days in quarantine, prompting an alert.

“And at one point, they were out and about on one particular day and I need to let people know of some places of concern,” Prof Spurrier said.

Authorities are urging people to get tested if they visited:

  • Flinders University Sturt Campus, Bedford Park – 13 November to 28 November

  • Big W Brickworks, Torrensville – Sunday 22 November 12.15 pm – 12.50 pm

  • Foodland Norwood, Norwood – Sunday 22 November 1.20 pm – 2 pm

  • Kmart, Kurralta Park – Sunday 22 November 2.45 pm – 3.10 pm

SA Health said shoppers should also isolate immediately.

Prof Spurrier also outlined a number of locations deemed to be “lower risk”. Anyone who visited such locations should monitor symptoms and get tested if they appear.

‘Lower risk’ locations include:

  • On The Run, Hilton – Sunday 22 November 12.05 pm – 12.15 pm

  • Anaconda, Mile End – Sunday 22 November 12.55 pm – 1.05 pm

  • Guzman y Gomez, Glandore – Sunday 22 November 2.45 pm – 2.50 pm

  • Glenelg Boost Juice Shop, Glenelg – Sunday 22 November 3.20 pm – 3.30pm

The reason they are lower risk is because the person who was infectious only visited each place for a short period of time, Prof Spurrier said.

On Sunday, South Australia recorded no new cases of Covid-19. Prof Spurrier confirmed a total of 33 cases have been linked to the Parafield cluster.

“In terms of our case and testing stats we have 17 active cases now so again that's good to hear that the active cases have dropped with 561 total cases,” she said.

She also said she was concerned with the low number of tests conducted in the past 24 hours.

On Saturday 3,425 tests were conducted across the state.

“So that is a concern to me, we do have a lower number of tests, and I had flagged that the day before it was a particularly hot day yesterday as well,” Prof Spurrier said.

“But we have done what we can to make the testing facilities as comfortable as possible for everybody.”
