King Frederik and Queen Margrethe coronation moment leaves fans in tears: 'Broke my heart'

The mother-son moment left many fans emotional.

Fans of the Danish royals were left heartbroken after seeing a video of the former queen Margrethe officially abdicating and leaving the throne to her son, the now King Frederik X.

Unlike King Charles and Queen Camilla's coronation, the ceremony was a quick one, with Frederik and Margrethe signing official documents, with the mother standing, giving her seat to her son, and saying, "God save the King," before leaving the room as a symbol of leaving the role.

Video of Margrethe leaving the room and appearing to cry was shared on the official Danish royal family's Instagram, with fans sharing that it left them in tears.

"When Queen Margrethe left the room, this broke my heart 🥹💔," one fan said.

"She cried? 😢," another asked, with one user responding, "I think all of us did," with another pointing out Frederik also teared up.

"Looks like she got emotional 🥺 such a wonderful person," someone else wrote.

"She was in tears as she walked out," another said.

"So touching and beautiful," one user added.

"The most beautiful and moving moment today was when Queen Margrethe offered her son to sit on the throne and said, 'God save the King', after which she quietly walked," another fan said.

"Oh, that brought me to tears," someone else added. "It's rare that we see our Queen so touched. Huge thanks for your long and impressive efforts 🥹."

Frederik was clearly emotional when he was introduced as King for the first time to the Danish people.

Queen Margrethe II abdicates

On New Year's Eve, Margrethe announced her decision to step down after 52 years on the throne.

"I have decided that now is the right time," the former queen, 83, said. "The 14th of January 2024, 52 years after I followed my beloved father, I will step back as the Queen of Denmark. I leave the throne to my son the Crown Prince Frederik."

After the ceremony took place, Frederik and Mary took to the balcony, with the new King telling the crowd he would be a unifying force for Danes.
