Kelly Ripa breaks down crying on “Live” over beloved dog Chewie's diminishing health: 'I love this dog so much'
Ripa and Mark Consuelos had an emotional moment reflecting on 17-year-old Chewie. "I always say she was my fourth kid, but I still treated her like a dog," Ripa said.
Kelly Ripa broke down in tears on Live With Kelly and Mark, as she and husband Mark Consuelos reflected Friday morning on their beloved 17-year-old dog Chewie's diminishing health.
Months before Chewie's 18th birthday in May, Ripa paused the show's most recent episode for a candid, emotional discussion about weighing options for the rest of Chewie's life, amid an upcoming talk show segment about how to care for senior pets.
"It's more of deciding when the end is for your pet," producer Michael Gelman told Ripa, after she previously discussed Chewie's physical condition earlier this week on Live.
"There are people that are like, 'You'll know when the time is right,' but there's also the other group saying, 'You don't really know when the right time is.' You just have to hope for the best and there really is not a wrong time when your dog has lived a full life and a great life and you start to see the quality of life diminish," Ripa said before Consuelos stepped in to move the show along, sensing that tears welled in his wife's eyes.
Still, Ripa spoke, crying as she exclaimed that Chewie is "the best dog," and revealing more of the couple's backstory with their cherished pet.
"She came to us at a time when we had three young kids. I always say she was my fourth kid, but I still treated her like a dog. Now I'm questioning, was I nice enough to her when she was a puppy? Because I had kids and I was trying to raise these kids," said Ripa. "It's been really difficult. She's an old broad, I'm an old broad, and she's like, 'You first!' The two of us are like, rattling around the house looking at each other."
Ripa stressed that she knows "there's real problems in the world," but that she's still "very emotional because I love this dog so much."
She said that she "really got to know" Chewie once her children left her New York City family home.
"I feel like my time with her, as long as it was, was still too short," Ripa finished, before the show moved on to another segment.

Earlier this week, Ripa revealed that Chewie slipped and fell after having an accident in the house, and that the dog is "slowing down" at the end of her life.
In addition to Chewie, Consuelos and Ripa also have another dog, 4-year-old Lena, whom the pair also regularly discuss on their talk show.
