When it comes to her street style, Katie Holmes has been known to take a risk or two from time to time, whether it's a shocking patchwork jacket, or her favorite Mary Jane flats in an unexpected color. With the arrival of cold weather, Holmes has been dabbling in fun accessories and interesting denim, and her latest outfit reflects her updated outfit philosophy.

The Dawson's Creek actress was spotted in New York City on December 22, likely heading to the theater for her current Broadway show, Our Town, wearing a fun take on '90s fashion. The star paired two wardrobe basics—a knit sweater in gray and a knee-length peacoat in a classic black—with two larger than life pieces that stole the show.

For bottoms, the 46-year-old wore faded brown low-rise, baggy barrel jeans, a '90s and early 2000s staple. Up top, she completed the look with large black sunglasses and a slouchy knit paperboy hat in a festive burgundy. Black leather finished off the outfit, making appearances in her shoulder bag, waist belt, and comfy loafers.

Holmes's approach to winter fashion is simple—she loves layering, and credits her personal stylist with making sure she looks good at all times. "For now, it's a lot of pants that I can put yoga pants underneath and cozy sweaters and just try to have some sort of balance to it," she told InStyle about how her enviable winter outfits are formulated. "My stylist Brie Welch is really good, so I really give her all of the props. I follow what she wears and I'm inspired by her."
