Night Moves explores going out through the lens of beauty. In the latest installment, InStyle spoke to Running Point star and Joico’s first-ever global celebrity spokesperson, Kate Hudson.

Describe your perfect night out.

I’m a foodie, so my perfect night out is at a really great restaurant in New York, even though L.A. has amazing food spots [too]. But New York, hands down. I appreciate restaurants with simple, minimal rooms and atmosphere, but I love a cozy room. I love a beautifully well-lit, architecturally beautiful room. To me, it’s about the food, the setting, and a lively atmosphere. And, of course, company, but I really love a good dinner and then bars that have nooks where you can just hang out. Also, I love a long walk after dinner. I’m a big theater person. So, the perfect night would probably be food, early dinner, theater, and a dive bar. With a really cute outfit that is comfortable with shoes you can walk in afterward because I like the 15-block walk. A little buzz, a long walk—I’m very happy.

What’s your go-to pregame drink?

For a big night, I always have champagne—super cold—and listen to loud music.

What are your top getting-ready tracks?

It just depends on the vibe. But at this point, it’s really my daughter dictating what we listen to because she’s so into pop music and goes through different phases of different pop stars. Right now, she’s discovered Selena Gomez, and she’s obsessed. She is as obsessed with her music as she is with her different hairstyles. It’s always Taylor Swift, though she also loves random things like Steely Dan. “Dirty Work” is one of her favorite songs. Oh, and The Bangles! She’s discovered The Bangles, and “Manic Monday” is one of her favorite songs. I introduced her to a lot of stuff, and she loves it.

If you could get ready with a famous person, dead or alive, who would it be?

Oh, I’d pick my famous friends! I would pick Stella McCartney and Liv Tyler because they are my favorite people to get ready with ever. But I guess if it had to be someone I don’t know, it’d be fun to see how Audrey Hepburn got ready. Or maybe Anita Pallenberg—she’d be so fun to get ready with. She’d probably throw on something in seconds and just go. She’s one of my style icons.

What’s your going-out beauty vibe?

I’ve had so many versions of what that looks like. I was just talking about this with one of my makeup artists. In the early aughts, my outlook was almost too casual, to the point where I cared so much to be casual that I’d say, “I’m not going to get dressed up,” but I’d do just a rim of black liner and a flush of color, and that was it—no mascara. I looked like a hammerhead shark because my eyes were so far apart. It was just the inner black liner. No brow, super simple. But that’s changed now. That was in my early 20s. Then, in my 30s, I started to want to put more effort in. I wanted to show up when I went out, put on the things I love, get my hair blown out, and care a little more. But I also think when you’re in the mom phase, you just throw your hair in a bun, trying to figure it out as fast as possible. And now I’m back, and I’m going to take the time to put an outfit together. So, it goes through phases.

What does a good hair night look like to you?

Oh, when my hair actually dries nicely—heaven. I have that in-between hair that’s half curly, half straight, and fine, so it’s problematic. But when it’s well-conditioned, it weighs down a little, and then I just put in a little balm. I’ll usually use Joico Dream Blowout cream, but I won’t blow-dry it. I leave it to dry naturally. If it dries well, I’m good to go. If not, I just throw it in a bun.

When the hair isn’t good, nothing’s good. Beauty-wise, if the hair doesn’t look right, it doesn’t matter what your makeup is doing—everything’s off. It’s really the most important part of a routine and probably the most challenging. Also, I color my hair, and if you don’t have the right products or protection, your hair just gets fried. As long as I’m conditioning my hair, it works, though. I’m really specific about the brands I work with, and I can’t promote something I don’t genuinely love. I’ve been using Joico’s Defy Damage KBOND20 Power Masque for a while, and since we started working together, I’ve been using the Defy Damage shampoo and conditioner. It’s amazing, especially for colored hair. I also have always loved the K-PAK–it’s the OG product!

What essentials do you pack in your evening bag?

Honestly, I just have my phone. And a lip gloss. Maybe I’ll bring a little concealer. But I’m simple!

After a night out, what’s your routine once you’re home?

I’ll always take my makeup off with an oil! And then I will try to keep it simple, so then I’ll just do a night cream. Maybe I’ll do under-eye cream, but I am one of those people who don’t really understand under-eye cream. It feels like your face cream does the same thing. Maybe sometimes I’ll do it, but then I’m like, What am I doing? I prefer the patches. If I’m washing my hair the next day, I’ll brush it, do a treatment, and let it soak overnight.
