The Kansas City Way to Make Canned Dinner Rolls 10x Better

As far as game day foods go, I will never pass up a bucket of crispy chicken wings or a heaping pile of loaded nachos. But I always need something carb-y too and that's why I always make something with canned dinner rolls for any Super Bowl watch party. That's looked different depending on the year, be it cinnamon sugar pull-apart bread or a simple batch of extra-buttery biscuits.

As a nod to the Chiefs heading back to play to claim another Vince Lombardi trophy, this year, I wanted to put a Kansas City spin on the beloved Pillsbury canned dinner rolls. But I couldn't help but wonder, how do I do that without slathering the dough with barbecue sauce? After some research, I learned that the Kansas City way to elevate the already near-perfect canned biscuits is to coat them in cinnamon sugar. The trick is inspired the super.popular cinnamon rolls from Stroud's Oak Ridge Manor restaurant in Kansas City.

What are Stroud's Cinnamon Rolls?

Barbecue and cheesy corn get the most attention when it comes to famous foods from Kansas City, but the midwest metropolis is more than sum of its savory succulent parts. In fact, a big part of the local food culture hinges on the people's love for cinnamon rolls.

In a 2017 story for Condé Nast Traveler, the writer Khushbu Shah explains, "Nearly every cafe, bakery, and even a restaurant run by James Beard Award-winning chefs had a cinnamon roll on the menu. KC has cinnamon roll making down to a science."

One of the most notable KC cinnamon rolls comes from Stroud's and it is not your typical definition of a cinnamon roll. Whereas a standard cinnamon roll has the cinnamon swirled inside the dough, the Stroud's cinnamon roll is a soft dinner roll drenched in melted butter and dressed head to toe in cinnamon sugar. "They’re seriously phenomenal and it’s impossible to stop at just one," writes the blog 5 Boys Baker.

If you want to save yourself a trip to Kansas City, making cinnamon sugar dinner rolls with canned dough will instantly teleport you to Stroud's even if you're just sitting on the couch watching the Super Bowl. Here's how it's done.

How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Dinner Rolls

Begin with a can of dinner roll or biscuit dough and fully soak each piece of dough in melted butter. Next, toss each buttered roll in cinnamon sugar. Bake the cinnamon sugar dinner rolls according to package directions.

While the rolls bake, combine more melted butter with some more cinnamon sugar in a bowl. Once out of the oven, brush the tops and sides of the rolls with the cinnamon sugar butter. Enjoy warm.
