Justin Long admits to pooping the bed while wife Kate Bosworth slept next to him: 'She was not judging'

“I was s---tting my brains out, and she was looking at me lovingly, and I thought: ‘This is really romantic,’” the "Barbarian" actor recounted.

Love means never having to say your sorry — even after ruining the bed sheets.

Just ask Justin Long, who learned that crucial lesson during a memorable trip to Mexico City with his wife, Superman Returns star Kate Bosworth. While appearing on the PIE podcast, the Barbarian actor told the unfortunate story of contracting food poisoning during their travels, which eventually led him to a sweet conclusion about their relationship.

“I was hooked up to an IV, and she was having to follow me to the bathroom with the thing,” he explained to hosts Kurt Sutter and Katey Sagal. “It was like Dumb and Dumber. I was just, like, really comically unloading, and then, at one point that night, I woke up, and… There’s no other way to say this. I can’t dance around it: I had s--t the bed.”

Long added, “I had s--t the bed, and she was in the bed.”

Despite his horror, Bosworth was more than patient.

“By the end, I was not even thinking about it. She was like two feet away from me with this IV bag and she was holding it so patiently, and she was like: ‘Everything’s fine,” Long recalled. “And I thought about how much I loved her. I was like: ‘I just love this person. I’m so grateful to this person.’”

He continued, “She was not judging, not making me feel weird, or bad, and I just felt so lucky, you know? I was s--tting my brains out, and she was looking at me lovingly, and I thought: ‘This is really romantic.’”

At the time, Long and Bosworth were in Mexico City as ambassadors for Smile Train, a charity benefiting children with cleft lips and palates. Long previously opened up to PEOPLE about his food poisoning, praising his wife for picking up the slack when he became too sick to contribute.

“Thankfully, it was just one day,” Long said. “And Kate, thank God, she was so great. She just picked up the torch, and she ended up doing the rest of that day like such a champ.

He also thanked the doctors, noting that he was sick on the same day the couple were set to tour a hospital. "I actually got to witness firsthand how great these doctors were and the level of excellence at this hospital,” Long said. “I was the direct recipient of all of this great, important funding from Smile Train.”

The couple quietly tied the knot last year, as Long himself revealed during the May 9, episode of his Life Is Short podcast. The news came just a month after their engagement.

You can hear Long recount his adventures with food poisoning in the podcast episode above.
