Joy Behar Recalls 'Screaming For Her Life' During Near-Death Experience
Joy Behar is opening up about a terrifying yet pivotal moment in her life.
During the latest episode of ABC's The View, Behar and her co-hosts swapped stories about some of their "near-death experiences," prompting Behar, 82, to open up about an ectopic pregnancy she had in the late 70s.
"I almost did die," she insisted during the broadcast on Friday, Jan. 24, while telling co-hosts Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, Ana Navarro and Alyssa Farah Griffin, "I had an ectopic pregnancy in 1979."
Behar went on to say, "It's different when someone else dies. It's not you. There I was and I thought, this is it, kid and I thought it was going—and I had blood internally, et cetera, the doctor was playing golf, of course—so I was on the gurney screaming for my life."
After going through such a traumatic event, Behar said the terrifying experience inspired her to change the way she was living her life in a number of different ways.
"And then after that happened, I let my hair go curly because I was straightening my hair out. I got a divorce," she said, adding, "I got fired from my job at Good Morning America."
"I completely changed my life," she said after surviving the near-death encounter. "And that's why I'm here today."
"So it really does make a difference," Behar added while fans in the show's audience cheered to support the TV personality.
Though Behar didn't detail what life changes led to her firing, during a November 2022 episode of the ABC morning talk show, Behar admitted she was the "worst receptionist they've ever had."
“So, let’s talk about ‘Welcome to Chippendales,’" she said at the time, welcoming the actor and comedian Kumail Nanjian. "First of all, I’d like to say that when I was fired from ‘Good Morning America’ years ago — I was the worst receptionist they’ve ever had — and, this is a true story, I was fired, they took me to Chippendales as my goodbye present … so, anyway I’m familiar with Chippendales.”
