Jon Stewart takes a dig at Donald Trump, praises Kamala Harris for not acting 'like a little bitch' on Jan. 6
The current Vice President certified the 2024 election results on the anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Monday was momentous for two reasons: it marked both the certification of the 2024 election results, and the fourth anniversary of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
So of course, Jon Stewart didn't let that coincidence go undiscussed. The Daily Show host wasted no time when it came to addressing the occasion in his Monday night monologue.
"What a historic day in Washington, D.C. it is. As many of you know, it's Jan. 6. And as you can see, once again, a blanket of angry white is descending on the Capitol," Stewart said, while flashing a photo of the U.S. Capitol covered in snow. "This white, oddly enough, not as disruptive. It did snarl traffic, but a lot less bear spray and Confederate flags."
He continued, "It is the day that traditionally, we now pretend that we knew was a big deal in terms of certifying the election. Be honest: before that insurrection you had no f---ing idea. You had no idea there was a January 6th ceremony or what it did or why it did, now you just gotta act like, 'Oh yeah! So important!'"
Stewart then pointed out the awkward fact that Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to President-elect Donald Trump in the November election, had to act as "master of ceremonies" as Congress certified the results. "The ultimate indignity," Stewart observed, before playing a clip of Harris certifying Trump’s Florida win, prompting Republicans in the chamber to stand and applaud.
"That’s got to sting," Stewart said with a grimace. "She’s like, ‘Um, I can hear you.'"

He quipped, "It's like attending your own funeral, and even the mourners are like, 'Woo-hoo!’ I can’t imagine anything that would be more uncomfortable than sitting there while the crowd applauds your opponent.”
The host then played a clip of Harris announcing her own votes from California, which prompted even more applause.
He joked, "Wait! That sounded louder! There is a lot of joy in that room. I think she can still win this thing! She just needs them to find 130,000 votes in Georgia. And then some in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and maybe Wisconsin and North Carolina…"
Jokes aside, Stewart went on to praise Harris' graceful role in the ceremony, and her commitment to overseeing a peaceful power transition in the lead-up to Trump's Jan. 20 inauguration.
"Ultimately, the certification ceremony that we all look forward to every four years went off without a hitch," he said. "Because it’s amazing how smoothly our democracy works when you don’t act like a little bitch when you lose."
While the studio audience laughed at the shady insurrection reference, Stewart held up his hands, "Not naming names! Just saying."
Following his loss to now-President Joe Biden in the 2020 election, Trump directed his supporters to march on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. The rioters stormed the Capitol, breached the building’s security, and sent lawmakers running to safety. Harris was at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington that day, when a pipe bomb was discovered nearby, prompting her to be evacuated from the building. Trump was later impeached by the House of Representatives, and charged with “incitement of insurrection," but was subsequently acquitted by the Senate.
To mark the attack's anniversary, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement: "Four years ago, the world watched as Donald Trump directed a violent mob that stormed our Capitol, attacking law enforcement and threatening our democratic institutions. The peaceful transfer of power is a hallmark of our democracy — especially when elections do not turn in our favor. Democrats remain steadfast in our support of the democratic values our country was founded on and will always work to ensure that our democratic processes and institutions continue to function in service of the American people, whether we win or lose."
Per the Associated Press, Harris echoed this sentiment following the Monday ceremony, telling reporters, "It’s a peaceful transfer of power,” Harris told reporters as she left the building on Monday. “It’s a good day."
